The eight best beaches that Antigua has to offer
Published on 26 Jul 2024
Situated in the heart of the Caribbean, Antigua is a tropical paradise that is a firm favourite amongst those searching for a blissful island getaway. This stunning oasis is perhaps best-known for having 365 beaches, one to explore every day of the year, as well as its rich culture, fascinating history and friendly locals. With pristine, white sand beaches, swaying palm-trees and the sparkling aquamarine sea, Antigua is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. Whether your dream cruise to the Caribbean involves sunbathing on the beach with an ice-cold drink, snorkelling in the crystal-clear Caribbean waters, or admiring the picture-perfect scenery as the sun begins to set over the ocean, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
One of the most popular and best-loved beaches in Antigua, Dickenson Bay is located just a short distance from St. John’s, the capital of Antigua and Barbuda. The proximity to the vibrant capital makes it the perfect choice for those on a Caribbean cruise. From unwinding on a sun lounger and taking gentle strolls across the white sand beach to venturing into the turquoise waters for exhilarating watersports or a boat trip where you might be lucky enough to spot a family of dolphins, this quintessential Caribbean beach offers something for everyone.
With its unique crescent shape, rugged landscape and sparkling azure waters, many will argue that Half Moon Bay is one of the best beaches in Antigua. Just a short drive from the charming FreeTown, Half Moon Bay allures both tourists and locals. The south end is known for being ideal for bodysurfers looking to catch a wave while the north attracts keen snorkellers hoping to see tropical fish and take a closer look at the colourful coral. If total relaxation is your goal, pack your towel and a captivating beach read and find a quiet space to bask in the sun with the waves caressing the soft, pink-hued shore as your soundtrack. Avid bird watchers will be pleased to learn that Half Moon Bay is a prime viewing location with sightings of Pelicans, Ospreys and Hawks reported.
Frequented by friendly locals who enjoy gathering for an exciting game of beach volleyball or cricket, and tourists who have been captivated by the serenity of this stunning spot, Fort James is one of the most favoured Antigua beaches. Those visiting the island as part of a cruise holiday will be pleased to know that Fort James Beach is located on the same side of Antigua as Dickenson Bay and is regarded as the closest quality beach to the port. Despite the ideal location, Fort James Beach is rarely overcrowded and is the perfect place for both sun-worshippers hoping to catch some rays from the comfort of a lounger and thrillseekers who are tempted by watersport action.
If you’re longing for the ultimate tropical island feel, then paying a visit to Long Bay Beach is an absolute must. Wander across the soft white sands, admire the row of beach huts painted in vibrant colours and stop for a cold drink or tasty ice cream in one of the bars or shops nearby. Widely considered to be Antigua’s best snorkelling spot, wade into the warm, clear-blue waters and get ready for an underwater adventure like no other. Among the colourful marine life, you may spot Angelfish, blue tangs and more. The impressive geological wonder Devil’s Bridge is also located nearby. A limestone arch, formed from millions of years worth of coral reef build-up, and several blowholes make a fascinating sight.
Situated on the western side of Antigua, Valley Church Beach is a popular stretch of sand that is visited and loved by many. This slice of heaven is popular amongst those who are keen to tick ‘taking a dip in the Caribbean sea’ off their bucket lists, as well as with beachgoers who are keen to try watersports like jet skiing, paddleboarding and kayaking and those who prefer to spend the day relaxing. If you start to feel peckish, sample some of the delicious local Caribbean cuisine at one of the nearby restaurants or stop for a refreshing drink at a nearby beach bar.
Just a short drive from English Harbour, Pigeon Point Beach is often regarded as one of the most treasured beaches on the island. With its idyllic natural surroundings, stretch of soft golden sand, and clear, tranquil sea, Pigeon Point Beach is a family-friendly spot enjoyed by both locals and tourists. Whether you choose to sample sumptuous seafood available at one of the nearby eateries, explore one of the popular scenic walking trails or immerse yourself in the fascinating history of the 18th Century Nelson’s Dockyard heritage site, there’s truly something for everyone.
Based on the west coast of Antigua, Ffryes Beach is popular amongst families, couples and solo travellers alike. Boasting crystal-clear waters, stretches of white sandy beaches and lush green hills, this location serves as the optimal spot for relaxation. Divided into two by a formation of rocks, beachgoers can choose to unwind on either ‘Big Ffryes’ or ‘Little Ffryes’.
If you’re staying in Antigua or you’re visiting the island as part of a cruise and stay holiday and you have longer to explore more beautiful beaches, pay a visit to Galleon Beach. Only accessible by car or water taxi from English Harbour, Galleon Beach is slightly trickier to access than some of the other beaches but it is undoubtedly worth it. Feel as though you have stepped into a postcard as you sink your toes into the pristine white sand and admire the breathtaking views. From sea turtles to tropical fish, marvel at the spectacular marine life as you snorkel in the crystal-clear Caribbean sea. Try one of the popular walking routes that lead to the Shirley Heights Lookout.
