Published on 27 Sep 2019
New York is a dream destination for many. Capturing memorable moments on our phones or cameras is the perfect way to remember the great times had in a great city. The Big Apple is full of world-renowned, iconic landmarks, views and buildings that all make the perfect picture spot. Whether you want to keep the photos as personal memories, send them to your friends and family or put them on Instagram, there is no better place than on the streets of your favourite city.
From the Empire State Building to The Rockefeller Centre and The Statue of Liberty, we asked bloggers and locals for their favourite selfie spots in this formidable location.
Situated inside the Egyptian wing of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in the heart of Manhattan lies the Temple of Dendur, an ancient temple dating back to 10 B.C. and one of the most symbolic mythological concepts. Not only is the iconic museum it sits within a historical hot spot for those looking to recreate the same images seen from the Met Gala but the temple itself plays host to its very own fans. One of those fans is Kelly Duhig who blogs at Girl with the Passport, she tells us all about the temple.
“Without a doubt, one of my favourite places to take selfies in New York City is the Temple of Dendur. This majestic temple is the perfect photo spot. Come here early to beat the crowds and marvel at the beautiful amount of sunlight that streams through the building's enormous glass walls and illuminates the temple. All in all, a truly magical place filled with culture, history and fantastic photo opportunities.”
The perfect spot for an iconic selfie, learn all about the history of this beautiful monument whilst also capturing the perfect snap.
Another of the city’s iconic skyscrapers, The Flat Iron Building is a selfie lovers’ paradise. With its unique and somewhat weird shape, the area that surrounds it is bustling with sightseers and city wanderers as they explore the wonders of the city. The striking triangular building was one of the city’s first skyscrapers as well as being a location renowned for its historical architecture. Its popularity with those looking to get the perfect shot is unprecedented and its iconic image is the perfect place for a selfie.
Pure Wow recently wrote about the best spots to take selfies in New York on their website and explained how to get the perfect snap: “Who can pass up one of the most iconic buildings in the city? Pro tip: Time it perfectly with passing yellow cabs. The bright primary colour contrasts beautifully with the neutral white buildings behind it.”
Almost as well known as the city itself, Times Square speaks for itself as the perfect selfie spot and it is obvious why. Walls of flashing adverts, artwork and thousands of people wandering, taking in the breathtaking views make it an ideal spot for snapping important memories. The vibrancy of the lights that surround the frame is awe-inspiring and a snap-shot that shouldn’t be missed.
Street Easy recommend Times Square as a selfie spot: “Ever wonder what sets the best selfies apart from the rest? The lighting, of course! Lucky for you, Times Square is always well-lit — just make sure you’re at least five feet away from any costumed characters, or you might get charged for that perfect pic.”
Having only opened in March 2019, The Vessel is a large bronze structure and landmark offering spectacular views across Manhattan and the surrounding areas of NYC. The elaborate-shaped honeycomb structure reaches 16 stories high with 80 landings for visitors to scale. The creative design and the stunning bronze colour create intriguing and unique shapes behind any selfie, and this new and innovative structure is a top spot for anyone looking to get ahead of the selfie trend.
“A new landmark that’s impossible to compare, it's hidden away close to the top of the High Line but is absolutely worth the walk to discover. It’s free to climb (although you do need to collect a ticket and await your time slot) and the views at the top are incredible; it almost doesn’t look real, looking over Manhattan from an open bronze staircase, but your photos will look amazing. Be prepared for lots of wind and hair-in-mouth pictures though; my top tip is to take some snaps about midway up to get some perspective in the background!” says Hayley Hall who loves visiting the landmark overlooking Manhattan.
Situated on the corner of Prince and Mott street on the side of the Space NK apothecary building is a stunning mural painted by artist Kelsey Montague. Known for creating murals across the globe, Kelsey chose this location in the heart of Manhattan and has in recent years seen it become a hub of activity.
Perfect for an outfit selfie or a couples photo, the trendy baby pink backdrop and detailed floral etchings are a must-visit for those looking to get the perfect summer NYC selfie.
Crossing the river over to Brooklyn, the beautiful bridge has made appearances in numerous films and TV shows and is a staple figure in the city’s makeup. Whether you’re on top of the bridge or you’re in Brooklyn Bridge Park looking up at its magnificence, the views are unprecedented.
With the backdrop of the New York skyline and the steel cables that hold this magnificent structure in place, selfie opportunities are rife. Head down to the streets beneath the bridge and capture a distance shot or head up onto the bridge for a close-up and detailed shot – either way, you can’t go wrong.
This article wouldn’t be complete without mentioning one of New York’s most famous landmarks, The Empire State Building. The 102-storey building is a hot spot for visitors and locals alike who are looking to get that snapshot across the city’s landscape. Built more than 80 years ago and one of the United States' tallest buildings, it’s easy to see why it is such a hub of activity. Coming alive at night, the view from the top of the Empire State Building is unlike any other and a popular spot for those looking to get the ultimate New York selfie. We spoke to Katey Blaire who blogs about her travels around the world and she recommended the Empire State Building:
“There's no place like New York City. Around every corner, there's action, inspiration, and a fantastic photo opportunity. No matter what part of the city you're exploring, you'll find ample opportunities to take a post-worthy picture.
“My favourite places to take pictures (or selfies, really) in NYC is up high, above the hustle and bustle. Find the nearest rooftop bar and snap a picture that will make all your friends jealous. Bonus points if you can catch one of NYC's most iconic buildings in the background, like the Freedom Tower or the Empire State Building!”
