The best time to cruise to Japan

A month-by-month guide on the best time to visit Japan

Published on 04 Dec 2024

Japan is a country of ever-changing seasons, each offering its own unique charm and experiences. Whether you’re dreaming of cherry blossoms in spring, vibrant autumn leaves or sparkling winter illuminations, the best time to cruise to Japan depends on what you’d like to see and do.

To help you plan your perfect trip, we’ve put together a month-by-month guide highlighting the weather, key events and must-see attractions throughout the year.

When is the best time to visit Japan?

The best time to visit Japan depends on what you want to experience. Spring (March to May) is ideal for cherry blossoms, mild weather and vibrant festivals, while autumn (September to November) offers stunning autumn foliage and comfortable temperatures.

Visit in winter (December to February) for winter sports, snowy landscapes, and festive illuminations. Summer (June to August) is great for lively festivals, fireworks, and beaches, though it’s hot and humid.

Cruise calendar: Japan

Japan in January

In January, Japan offers a mix of winter beauty, cultural traditions, and fun activities. The north is snowy and perfect for skiing, while central areas like Tokyo and Kyoto are cold but dry, and the south is milder. New Year celebrations are a big deal, with shrine visits and family gatherings. You’ll find stunning snowy landscapes, relaxing hot springs and winter illuminations in cities like Tokyo and Osaka. It’s also a great time to shop, with New Year sales and “Lucky Bags.”

Japan in February

In February, Japan is a winter wonderland with snowy landscapes, cultural festivals, and the first signs of spring in southern regions. Northern areas are perfect for skiing and snowboarding, while cities are chilly but dry. Highlights include the famous Sapporo Snow Festival, the magical Yokote Kamakura Festival with candlelit igloos and Setsubun, a lively tradition to welcome spring. Winter illuminations light up evenings, and hot springs offer cosy relaxation.

Japan in March

Japan in March is a time of transition from winter to spring, offering cool but comfortable weather and the first signs of cherry blossoms, especially in southern regions. Northern areas still have snow and are great for skiing, while central regions enjoy milder temperatures, perfect for sightseeing. Key highlights include the Girls’ Day festival, the fire-filled Omizutori ceremony in Nara, and spring equinox celebrations. Plum blossoms are still in bloom, and late March marks the start of cherry blossom season in many areas.

Japan in April

April is a stunning time to visit Japan, with cherry blossoms in full bloom across much of the country. Mild weather makes it ideal for outdoor activities, from blossom viewing in parks to exploring temples and gardens. Northern regions like Hokkaido are cooler and see blossoms later in the month, while southern areas like Okinawa are already warm. April also features vibrant spring festivals like the Takayama Festival and beautiful flower blooms like wisteria and tulips.

Japan in May

May is a beautiful time to visit Japan, with warm, comfortable weather and vibrant natural scenery. Northern areas still enjoy spring blooms, while central and southern regions are lush and green, with temperatures ranging from 13-28°C. May features colourful flower displays, like wisteria tunnels and pink moss near Mount Fuji, as well as lively festivals such as Tokyo’s Kanda Matsuri and Kyoto’s Aoi Matrusi. Golden Week (29th of April to the 5th of May) is a busy holiday period, so plan ahead if visiting then.

Japan in June

In Japan, June is the start of the rainy season in most areas, bringing warm, humid weather and lush green landscapes. Northern regions stay cool and dry, while central and southern areas experience light but frequent rain. It’s a great time to see blooming hydrangeas at gardens and temples like Tokyo’s Sanno Matsuri and Nagoya’s Atsuta Matsuri.

Japan in July

Japan in July is hot, humid, and full of energy. Temperatures range from 23°C to 31°C in most regions, though cooler in northern areas. It’s the perfect time for summer festivals like Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri and Osaka’s Tenjin Matsuri, as well as spectacular fireworks displays across the country. Outdoor enthusiasts can climb Mount Fuji or enjoy water activities and beaches in Okinawa.

Japan in August

In August, Japan is hot and humid, with temperatures reaching up to 35°C in central and southern regions, while northern areas are cooler and more comfortable. The month is full of vibrant summer festivals, such as Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri and the illuminated Aomori Nebuta Matsuri, as well as breathtaking fireworks displays. Mid-August marks Obon, a spiritual festival honouring ancestors. Beaches and outdoor adventures are popular, especially in Okinawa and Hokkaido.

Japan in September

In September, Japan transitions from summer to autumn, with warm, humid weather in most areas and cooler, pleasant temperatures in the north. Early in the month, rain and occasional typhoons are common, especially in southern regions. By late September, the first signs of autumn foliage appear in northern and mountainous areas. It’s a great time for hiking, exploring gardens and temples, and enjoying seasonal foods like chestnuts and mushrooms.

Japan in October

October is a beautiful time to visit Japan, with cooler weather, vibrant autumn foliage, and cultural festivals. Northern areas see peak autumn colours, while central regions enjoy mild, comfortable temperatures. Highlights include the Takayama Autumn Festival, Kyoto’s dramatic Kurama Fire Festival, and seasonal foods like chestnuts, sweet potatoes and persimmons. It’s perfect for nature walks, exploring temples and enjoying harvest celebrations.

Japan in November

Japan in November is stunning, with autumn foliage at its peak, mild weather and plenty of cultural charm. Northern areas are cooler, with temperatures near freezing, while central regions are mild and perfect for outdoor activities. Highlights include colourful leaves in Kyoto’s Arashiyama, Nikko’s shrines and autumn illuminations at temples and gardens. Seasonal foods like hot pot and roasted sweet potatoes add to the experience.

Japan in December

In Japan, December is a mix of winter charm and festive cheer. Northern areas are snowy and perfect for skiing, while central regions are cool with clear skies, ideal for sightseeing. Southern areas like Okinawa are milder, offering a warmer escape. Cities sparkle with dazzling winter illuminations and festive decorations create a lively holiday atmosphere. December is also a time for traditional New Year preparations.
