Celebrity Cruises announce first-ever cruise led by women

In celebration of International Women’s Day, Celebrity Cruises will be launching their first ever cruise led by women for 2020.

Published on 20 Nov 2019

Set to sail in 2020, Celebrity Edge will be hosting a historic sailing to mark International Women’s Day with an all-female Bridge and officer team. Captain Kate McCue, the first American female cruise ship captain, will be leading a team of 26 women which includes three Brits; Rachel Arnold, First Officer, Sue Denning, Cruise Director and Julie Sherrington, Guest Relations Director.

The sailing is part of Celebrity Cruises’ #BRIDGETheGap initiative, which highlights the traditionally male-dominated sector. Research by Celebrity found that only 2% of the world’s mariners are women therefore the cruise line is looking to encourage women into positions of leadership.

This exciting voyage, which departs on 8th March 2020 from Fort Lauderdale, will mark the first time in history that an entire Bridge and officer team is led by women. Captain McCue said; “Excitement does not even begin to describe how I’m feeling about working alongside these incredible, barrier-breaking women on Celebrity Edge for this truly historic sailing.

I am inspired every day by the amazing women we have working throughout this organisation – both on land and at sea. They’re proof that there’s power in diversity.”

The itinerary will feature a host of special events including Women of the World-themed trivia challenges, a Fearless Female Officers vs. Guests Pool Volleyball tournament and a panel with the ship's inspiring female leadership team.
