Food lies at the heart of Spanish culture, reflecting the country’s rich history and cherished traditions through a tapestry of diverse and iconic dishes. Meals in Spain are more than just sustenance—they are a way to bring families and communities together. Dishes like tapas and paella are designed for sharing, fostering a sense of connection and togetherness around the table. Whether you’re preparing for a Spanish adventure on a cruise and want to discover the must-try foods, or you’re inspired to recreate the bold, vibrant flavours of Spain in your own kitchen, our guide to Spanish cuisine will leave you both excited and, quite possibly, a little hungry! Here are some of the most popular and celebrated Spanish dishes.

Popular Spanish Dishes

Paella

Paella, celebrated as Spain’s iconic national dish, is a vibrant and flavoursome masterpiece that often takes centre stage at family gatherings and festive celebrations. Steeped in history and tradition, this beloved dish fills kitchens and restaurant tables across the country, its rich aromas and golden hues a symbol of togetherness and culinary pride. Paella begins with a sofrito, a fragrant base of onions, garlic, tomatoes, and peppers gently fried in olive oil and seasoned with a harmonious blend of paprika, rosemary, cayenne pepper, garlic, and saffron. The star ingredients—rice infused with these bold flavours—are paired with an array of meats, seafood, and vegetables, creating a beautifully balanced and hearty dish.

Patatas Bravas

Patatas Bravas, meaning "spicy potatoes," is a beloved dish hailing from Madrid and a staple of Spanish cuisine. Crispy, golden potatoes served with a bold, tangy sauce make this dish a timeless favourite among locals and visitors alike. It is usually paired with a Spanish Omelette, roast cod, or crusty bread amongst many other things. It can also be served as a tapas dish alongside other small bites.

Gazpacho

Gazpacho is a classic Spanish soup celebrated for its lightness and freshness, made with raw, blended vegetables and served chilled. The key ingredients typically include ripe tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, red bell peppers, and garlic, all brought to life with a drizzle of olive oil, a splash of vinegar, and a pinch of salt for seasoning. The abundance of vegetables ensures that it is bursting with vitamins and offers numerous health benefits. Serving it cold enhances the vibrant, natural flavours of the ingredients, making it a refreshing choice, especially on warm, sunny days.

Churros

If you’re craving a sweet treat, churros are a classic Spanish snack made from a combination of flour, water, butter and eggs to make the choux pastry dough. The dough is piped into long, elegant shapes before being carefully placed into hot oil and fried to a golden, crispy perfection. They are usually coated in sugar and cinnamon and are often accompanied by a dipping pot of melted chocolate. Churros are traditionally enjoyed hot, either as a delightful breakfast treat or a sweet dessert, making them a versatile favourite in Spanish cuisine.

Tortilla Española

Tortilla Española, which translates to Spanish Omelette, is a versatile classic that can be enjoyed at any time of day. It can be savoured hot, cold, or at room temperature, making it perfect as a satisfying snack, a tempting appetiser, a tapas dish, or a hearty main course. It is usually made with eggs, thinly sliced potatoes, onions, and olive oil and seasoned with salt and pepper. Other common ingredients include roasted red peppers, ham, and tuna.

Padrón Peppers (Pimientos de Padrón)

Padrón Peppers, small green peppers native to Spain, are a popular choice for snacks or tapas. Padrón Peppers are a type of chilli with a playful twist—they vary in heat, adding an element of surprise and fun to group dining. While most are mild, some have a medium kick, and every so often, you might encounter one that packs a fiery punch. They are typically prepared by frying, coating, stuffing, or flame-cooking, but the most common method is sautéing them in olive oil and finishing with a sprinkle of sea salt. Often served with flavoured mayonnaise for dipping, these peppers offer a simple yet irresistible burst of flavour.

Jamón

Jamón, or cured ham, is one of Spain's most iconic and celebrated delicacies. It is a versatile delight that can be enjoyed at any time of day, including breakfast, where it’s often savoured on crusty bread for a simple yet flavourful meal. One of the most renowned types of cured ham is Jamón Ibérico, crafted from the hind leg of Black Iberian pigs. Widely regarded as one of the finest hams in the world, it boasts a rich history spanning over two thousand years. Historically, Jamón is believed to have been a delicacy reserved exclusively for royalty until the 13th century, further enhancing its reputation as a symbol of prestige and tradition.

Spanish Croquettes

A croquette is a delicious deep-fried delicacy featuring a golden, crispy breadcrumb coating and a rich, creamy filling. The filling typically combines ingredients such as vegetables, ham, or cod, mixed with a velvety binder made from mashed potatoes or béchamel sauce, creating a rich and indulgent texture. Croquettes are commonly served as appetisers, but they can also shine as a main dish when paired with a fresh, crisp salad.

Sangria

Sangria is a beloved Spanish alcoholic beverage known for its vibrant and refreshing character. Classic sangria is traditionally crafted with red wine, brandy or rum, fruit juice, sugar, and an assortment of chopped fruits such as apples and oranges. However, regional variations abound, and the colour of sangria changes depending on the wine used—red sangria with red wine and white sangria with white wine, each offering its own unique twist on this iconic drink.
