Published on 08 Jun 2021
national anthem (noun)
A solemn patriotic song officially adopted by a country as an expression of national identity.
National anthems are patriotic musical compositions that evoke the history and traditions of a country and its people. Typically, national anthems are recognised either by a nation’s government or by convention through use by its people. National anthems rose in popularity in the 19th century with many countries around the world adopting the custom. However, some national anthems originated much earlier. The Netherlands’ national anthem, Wilhelmus, was written between 1568 and 1572 but did not become the official anthem until 1932.
National anthems are used in a wide array of contexts. They are most commonly played on national holidays, festivals and sports events. Usually, marches or hymns, national anthems are typically written and recited in the most common language of the country though some nations have multiple versions to reflect multiple languages. For example, Switzerland’s national anthem is in four languages; French, German, Italian and Romansh.
