New Zealand bucket list

Find out what’s waiting for you in New Zealand

Published on 18 Dec 2024

New Zealand is a country that feels like it was made for adventure. No wonder it’s a dream destination for travellers. Whether it’s cruising through the dramatic beauty of Milford Sound or witnessing the magic of the Southern Lights, New Zealand offers unforgettable experiences at sea. This bucket list highlights the very best the country has to offer - the must-dos, the hidden gems and the moments that will make your trip truly special.

Five things to do in New Zealand:

Cruise through Milford Sound

Milford Sound, located in the stunning Fiordland National Park, is New Zealand’s most iconic and frequented fjords. Carved by glaciers, Milford Sound is a masterpiece of nature, with its glassy waters framed by towering peaks and hundreds of cascading waterfalls. Rainforests cling to steep cliffs, while seals, dolphins and even rare penguins make their home in this pristine wilderness. A cruise through Milford Sound is the ultimate way to experience its magic, where the only sounds you’ll hear are the gentle lapping of waves, birdsong and the distant rush of waterfalls.

Go whale watching in Kaikōura

Kaikōura is one of the best places in the world for whale watching. This beautiful coastal town on New Zealand’s South Island sits next to a deep underwater trench, which attracts marine life all year round. Kaikōura is best known for its whale-watching tours, where you can see sperm whales throughout the year. Depending on the season, you might also spot humpback whales, orcas and even blue whales, along with playful dolphins and New Zealand fur seals. Whale-watching tours are done by boat, giving you the chance to see these incredible creatures up close.

Hike one of New Zealand’s Great Walks

New Zealand’s Great Walks are a series of stunning multi-day hiking trails that showcase the country’s most beautiful and diverse landscapes. Each trail offers a unique experience, from mountains and rainforests to beaches and lakes. Popular Great Walks include the Milford Track, Kepler Track and Routeburn Track. The Milford Track is famous for its waterfalls and valleys, and it ends at Milford Sound. The Kepler Track is a loop trail with lakes, forests and stunning alpine views. The Routeburn Track boasts alpine views, crystal-clear lakes and dramatic peaks. Which will you pick?

Try local wine

With approximately 755 wineries, wine tasting in New Zealand is a must. The country is best known for its Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, while regions like Hawke’s Bay produce rich reds like Merlot and Syrah, and Central Otago is famous for its smooth Pinot Noir. Smaller regions like Wairapa and Gisborne also produce excellent wines. Enjoy relaxed tastings at vineyard cellar doors, guided tours and food pairings with local produce, all while surrounded by breathtaking landscapes of mountains, rolling hills and coastlines.

Witness the Southern Lights

The Southern Lights, or Aurora Australis, is a magical natural light display that can be seen in New Zealand’s southern skies, especially during the winter months. The best places to see it include Stewart Island, Lake Tekapo, The Catlins and parts of Southland like Dunedin and Invercargill, where dark skies and minimal light pollution offer the clearest views. The lights glow in shades of green, pink and purple as they dance along the southern horizon. For the best chance to witness them, head south and stay patient.
