3 must-visit Greek islands

Published on 17 Mar 2020

Picking your next holiday destination can be a tricky decision. There are so many beautiful places that occupy people’s travel bucket lists that wading through all the options can feel like a mountain climb. It’s the same with cruise holidays. If there was one place that you had to put at the top of your bucket list, where would it be? We’d have to say a strong contender is Greece. Here, we chat to 3 bloggers about their favourite Greek islands:

Corfu

Chosen by Amy Hart

Amy from Four Born to Explore recommends Corfu. This beautiful island houses some of the best of Greek history and there are several UNESCO-listed sites including castles and museums. Of course, there are also strong links to Lawrence and Gerald Durrell, British writers who lived in Corfu for some time and were known for the books they wrote while here. The island itself has many different places to visit from the mountains in the north to Corfu Town in the east.

“Corfu truly is a jewel in the Ionian Sea,” Amy explains. “The imposing columns of the Greek Orthodox Church dominate the grounds of The Old Fortress in Corfu. Truly a remarkable Old Town, one can wander the cobbled streets and explore a part of history, whilst enjoying delicious fresh seafood and gelato. There are boutiques to browse, Insta-worthy architecture to peruse and so many views to soak in. We got the bus there from our hotel which made for a perfect day trip.”

Paros

Chosen by Paulina on the Road

Paulina from Paulina on the Road told us why Paros is her favourite Greek island, “Located very close to Mykonos and Santorini, Paros reunites the best that Greece offers, without being spoiled by mass tourism. Expect white-washed houses, excellent food, affordable hotels and pristine beaches.

“However, it’s the active travel options that made me fall in love with Paros. There are plenty of trails that take you to remote villages and many beaches that offer excellent conditions for water sports. There are plenty of things to do in Paros, meaning it’s perfect for those who want to dive into Greek culture.” Thanks to the varied landscape of all Greek islands, those looking for an active holiday are in for a treat. Paros is a little quieter than most other islands as it is far more traditional. If you have the time, you can visit it by ferry from Santorini.

Santorini

Chosen by Rachael Scott

Santorini overlooks the Aegean Sea, showcasing its Greek grandeur. Its cliffside towns owe their landscape to a 16th-century volcanic eruption that changed the land of the whole island, creating the shelf like towns that are famous to Santorini.

With picturesque views and romantic walks, it’s no wonder Racheal from The Pretend Grown Up fell in love. “There is something quite magical about Santorini,” She explains. “Although only visiting for a day as part of my cruise, I got to explore both Oia and the capital, Fira. With the whitewashed buildings, blue roofs, beautiful views and friendly locals, it’s safe to say Santorini stole my heart. I have visited quite a few of the Greek Islands but this was definitely my favourite. I can’t wait to return one day to soak up everything it has to offer.”
