Six things you wouldn’t expect to find on a cruise ship

From planetariums and world-class spas to go-karting tracks, expect experiences that rival those of top resorts on land

Cruise ships are innovation hubs filled with surprises which elevate the travel experience. The impressive onboard facilities stretch far beyond exquisite dining options, spacious suites and swimming pools. The true allure of cruising lies in the ability to explore multiple destinations while enjoying a plethora of activities and amenities that go beyond the ordinary. From planetariums and world-class spas to go-karting tracks, expect experiences that rival those of top resorts on land. Here, we detail some unique features aboard popular cruise ships that you may not have expected to find.

Le Petit Chef

This immersive, one-of-a-kind dining concept is an experience that the entire family can enjoy. Le Petit Chef is available onboard every Edge Series ship in the Celebrity Cruises fleet. Watch in amazement as your tabletop is brought to life with charming 3D animations that are bound to captivate and delight. As you wait for your meal, be entertained by a tiny, animated character who prepares each course right before your eyes. After they have finished preparing and cooking, waiters will serve the same delicious dish for you to enjoy.

Magic Carpet

Celebrity Edge is home to the world’s first cantilevered, floating platform that reaches heights of 13 stories above sea level. This spectacular space is the size of a tennis court and boasts stylish seating, a full bar and space for live music performances. From providing an idyllic setting to enjoy mouthwatering dining experiences to becoming a stunning extension of the main pool area, the clever design means that Celebrity Cruises’ Magic Carpet transforms into a new and exciting venue depending on its position.

Mission Control

Thrill-seekers unite! Arvia  proudly hosts one of the first escape rooms at sea, Mission Control. P&O Cruises has created a multi-sensory adventure where players must form teams and work together to solve puzzles and crack codes. Play as marine explorers and underwater detectives as you board the fictional submarine Avia II. The realistic 3D surroundings add another layer of excitement to the experience.

Illuminations

A trip to Illuminations on board Cunard’s iconic Queen Mary 2 will leave you starry-eyed. Nestle into the plush, comfortable seating and be transported on an unforgettable voyage across the solar system in the largest planetarium at sea. Here, you’ll find an impressive, retractable planetarium dome, intriguing lessons on navigating by the stars, and fascinating science and natural history films. The venue also serves as the perfect place to watch 3D films, concerts and musical recitals.

Otium

Experience the essence of luxury and tranquillity at Otium Spa exclusively on board Silver Dawn and Silver Nova. Enter a state of bliss as you unwind in serene surroundings that resemble paradise and enjoy world-class treatments. The concept of Silversea’s Otium ensures that relaxation and luxurious experiences do not end when you leave the spa area. The Roman-inspired wellness revolution aims to create a world of leisure and pleasure that extends from spa to suite.

Prima Speedway

Go full-throttle into this exhilarating entertainment experience. Spread over three levels, the go-karting track is the perfect pastime for those who are keen to get the adrenaline flowing and fuel a little healthy competition amongst friends. In 2017, Norwegian Cruise Line introduced the first go-kart at sea on Norwegian JoyNorwegian Prima takes this experience to a whole new level with its multi-level racetrack. Only one question remains: who will be the first to cross the finish line?
