Join ROL Cruise team member Ben as he sails on Queen Elizabeth
Published on 04 Dec 2023
Recently, ROL Cruise team member Ben was lucky to spend four nights onboard Cunard’s iconic Queen, Queen Elizabeth. Here, he shares details:
I recently had the opportunity to spend four nights on the wonderful Queen Elizabeth, who is part of the Cunard fleet. Upon embarking, the staff and the ship made the best first impression possible.
Queen Elizabeth was docked in Civitavecchia, so not a port where the classic embarkation process was followed. It was as smooth as you like and, within twenty minutes, we were all onboard and making our way to our cabins. I was allocated a Britannia Balcony cabin, starboard side on Deck 4, which offered some stunning views of the sunsets on what seemed to be an endless ocean. As a first-time cruiser, I was keen to take in as much as I could. The cabin was spacious and comfortable with a king-sized bed, a desk, a sofa, a coffee table and plenty of storage to hang up clothing and store away my suitcase.
With plenty of free time before officially meeting the other travel partners, I explored the ship. I headed to the Lido Restaurant on Deck 9 for some lunch, had a quick workout in the gym and made sure I was familiar with a few different locations onboard.
A drinks reception was held for us in the Yacht Club, which I was told is where it happens in the evening - and it certainly didn’t disappoint! We spent most evenings here following dinner. The silent disco was a personal favourite, it’s always a surreal experience but a lot of fun nonetheless.
A standout moment for me, which is possibly only a small thing for others, was when, on my way to my cabin to change for dinner, the head of housekeeping introduced himself. He welcomed me onboard and explained that he would be looking after my cabin for the next few days - he was my port of call if I needed anything. It made me feel so special and I knew I would be looked after very well during my time onboard.
Dining onboard and the service in the restaurants were always top tier - staff were always attentive and kind. I enjoyed a couple of breakfasts in the Britannia Restaurant on Decks 2 and 3 - there was a perfect seat at the large rear windows, though you really did need to be an early worm to land the amazing view. I spent other mornings in the Lido Restaurant, there’s so much to choose from that I’m sure nobody ever goes hungry! Even en route to the cabin after one of the first evenings onboard, there were some snacks available. I couldn’t say no to a cheeky cookie!
Also, on the very last night onboard, we dined in The Verandah Restaurant on Deck 2. At a reasonable supplement for the quality of the dishes, I’d recommend trying at least one. The bread, especially, was the talk of the table!
The activities onboard are so inclusive and it’s fantastic to see so many people involved in the dance classes, quizzes and more. I was also impressed by the cocktail tasting - the knowledge and stories behind the drinks in the Commodore Club were so interesting. I’d recommend the Chieftain of the Clan, which is inspired by Commodore Sir Robert Irving.
The afternoon tea is served daily and, once again, is a must-see and a must-taste! The staff collectively enter the Queens Room, impeccably dressed with their white gloves, it’s a timeless sight to behold. Once the food arrives, the selection of sandwiches, cakes and the most perfectly baked scones are so inviting that it makes it impossible to resist.
Overall, the experience of Queen Elizabeth was a great introduction for a first-time cruiser and one I will never forget. It has shown me how timeless Cunard is. It’s a wonderful feeling to get dressed up for dinner and enjoy the gala events, everyone really makes an effort, which adds to the overall experience. I cannot speak highly enough of this beautiful ship, the caring and attentive staff and the delicious food. A Cunard sailing is a must for everyone.
