Sailing through Norway’s fjords

Staff stories: Sailing the Fjords with Hurtigruten

Welcome back, Lia! You recently sailed Norway aboard Hurtigruten’s MS Nordnorge. What was the onboard experience like?

The staff on MS Nordnorge were amazing - nothing was too much trouble for them! They were very welcoming and friendly at all times.

The onboard experience team were fantastic, they gave in-depth briefings about what was going on the following day so we were always kept informed, didn’t miss anything and knew what to expect.

How does Hurtigruten differ from other cruise lines?

Hurtigruten is all about the destination. It was great to see so many different ports of call during such a short voyage.

Also, the shore excursions available gave us a real insight into each port. We were lucky enough to participate in two excursions - my favourite was the famous Atlantic Road which really captured how beautiful Norway’s scenery is.

Can you tell us a bit more about your itinerary?

Our itinerary was jam-packed - we stopped at a variety of ports each day. Some days we called at eight ports! While we were not able to disembark at every port due to limited timings, it was still great to be able to sail in and see the beautiful scenery.

We were also very fortunate to be onboard while it was Norway’s National Day and we saw parades and celebrations in each port.

Which was your favourite port and why?

Tromsø was my favourite port. We docked here just before midnight and had about an hour and a half in port. It was great to be able to get off and experience the Midnight Sun. Still being able to fully appreciate what the city had to offer at that time of night was amazing and also very surreal.

Lastly, do you have any top tips for customers sailing on the same itinerary?

Download the Hurtigruten app! The app gives you the itinerary for each day, the menu and port timings. It is only available to use while onboard but can be downloaded in advance.

Another thing I’d recommend is to keep announcements on while in your cabin. We were notified of several whale sightings while onboard which gave us the opportunity to head out on deck and see.
