The Love Boat, a reader's story

A heartfelt story shared by a Blue Horizons reader in 2008

Published on 11 Mar 2025

In celebration of our 30th anniversary, we have been enjoying taking a trip down memory lane. So far, we've gone through the timeline of ROL Cruise, revisited a beautiful love story that was born on the QE2 Maiden Voyage, and taken a look at how cruise ships have evolved over the last three decades. Today, we’re sharing another heartwarming love story that was published in our Blue Horizons magazine in 2008. Our reader, Roger, wrote in to share how his life became a little brighter as he found love after loss on a cruise holiday.

“I saw your advert in Blue Horizons asking for your favourite cruise adventures, well this is mine, I hope you like it.

In September of last year, I booked a cruise onboard the Black Watch to the Canary Islands. I lost my wife over a year ago with cancer, so I thought I would go on a cruise to try and rebuild my life a little bit.

I went to the singles meeting and met other people in the same boat as me, then I went to the evening entertainment in the lounge where I met this lovely lady called Celia, she was on her second cruise and we had a drink together in the lounge, we then had a dance together and we talked for ages.

We couldn’t see a lot of each other as Celia was on the second sitting for dinner, I was on the first, but we met every evening for drinks and dancing. I had a drink waiting for her as she came down to the lounge and saved her a seat next to me, we became very close and she brightened up my life.

When we came off the ship, we gave each other our phone numbers and we have met each other a lot of times. I have stayed at her house and Celia has stayed at mine, we have booked another cruise for next year together and we are going to Italy in September, so you see we did meet on a cruise and we found love on a ship.

Hope you like my story.

Yours faithfully,

Roger”
