An introduction to our ROL Cruise Ambassadors, a friendly face onboard
Published on 31 Mar 2025
If you’re sailing with ROL Cruise, you may have the pleasure of meeting our Ambassadors, who are on hand to ensure your holiday is as seamless and enjoyable as possible. With a wealth of cruising experience, they can offer friendly advice on everything from Cruise Miles® and documentation to future bookings and making the most of your destinations. Let’s meet them…
With 15 years of cruising experience and 11 years as ROL Cruise Ambassadors, John and Liz Schultz are dedicated to making every guest’s experience as enjoyable and seamless as possible. Their role is all about welcoming guests, offering expert advice and ensuring everyone on board feels valued and supported.
With 10 years of experience as ROL Cruise Ambassadors, Joan and Chris Rossiter are passionate about ensuring every guest has a memorable cruising experience. As friendly and familiar faces on board, they serve as the vital link between ROL Cruise and guests, offering guidance, assistance and plenty of insider tips to help guests make the most of their voyage.
Can you tell us a bit about your role as an ROL Cruise Ambassador? What does a typical day onboard look like for you?
Joan and Chris: We’ve had the pleasure of being ROL Cruise Ambassadors for the past 10 years, and it’s a role we truly love. Our main focus is to ensure that ROL guests have the best possible experience while on board. We act as a friendly point of contact, liaising with senior management to address any queries or concerns and making sure everything runs smoothly.
A highlight of our role is hosting the exclusive ROL Cruise Cocktail Party. It’s a fantastic opportunity for guests to mingle, share their cruise experiences and enjoy a drink in a relaxed, sociable setting.
On a typical sea day, we start by manning our dedicated desk, where guests can pop by with any questions - whether they need assistance with an issue, advice on future cruises or simply a chat about their holiday. If there’s anything we can’t resolve on the spot, we liaise with the ROL Cruise Head Office and follow up personally, either by phone or with a note delivered to their cabin.
The rest of the day allows for a bit of flexibility, though we’re always on hand should reception need us to meet with a guest. Ultimately, our role is about making sure every ROL Cruise guest feels supported, informed and well looked after throughout their journey.
John and Liz: Our role as ROL Cruise Ambassadors is all about making sure our guests feel welcomed, valued and well looked after throughout their journey. Each day is different, depending on whether we’re at sea or in port, but the one constant is that we’re always available to support our fellow cruisers.
Before every sailing, we personally write to all ROL Cruise guests to introduce ourselves and let them know where to find us on board. It’s always wonderful to see familiar faces returning to say hello, as well as meeting new guests who are experiencing an ROL Cruise holiday for the first time.
On a sea day, we set up early at our designated area - often catching the early risers, which they always appreciate! From 9:00 am onwards, we’re available to chat about future cruises, share destination insights and assist with any customer service queries. If there’s something we can’t resolve on board, we have a direct link to our fantastic team back at HQ - most recently, Tamsin and Morgen - who help us ensure every query is handled as smoothly as possible. We also take time to personally deliver invitations for our much-anticipated ROL Cruise Cocktail Party, which is always a highlight of the trip.
On port days, we take the opportunity to explore alongside our ROL guests, sometimes sharing a tea or coffee ashore and swapping stories about our travel experiences. It’s these moments - whether on board or in port - that make our role so special, and we feel incredibly privileged to be part of each guest’s cruise experience.
What do you enjoy most about being an Ambassador?
J & C: One of the greatest privileges of being an ROL Cruise Ambassador is serving as the link between ROL Cruise and our wonderful guests. We love being that friendly, familiar face on board - someone guests can turn to for advice, a helping hand or simply a good chat about all things cruising.
J & L: Being an ROL Cruise Ambassador is such a privilege. We truly feel like we’re part of our guests’ cruise experience, and one of the greatest joys is building lasting friendships along the way. Over the years, we’ve had the pleasure of looking after more than 4,000 ROL Cruise guests, with many returning time and time again. It’s always a highlight to catch up, share stories and welcome familiar faces back onboard.
How do you support guests while onboard?
J & C: Our main priority as ROL Cruise Ambassadors is to ensure that every guest feels supported and well looked after throughout their journey. We’re always on hand to help with any questions or concerns, whether it’s offering guidance on upcoming ports, assisting with onboard queries, or simply lending a friendly ear.
If an issue arises, we do our very best to resolve it there and then. If it’s something that requires further assistance, we’ll point guests in the right direction - whether that’s connecting them with the right team on board or reaching out to our fantastic colleagues at ROL Cruise Head Office for extra support.
J & L: Cruising is our passion, and nothing gives us more satisfaction than helping others get the most out of their holiday. Whether it’s assisting first-time cruisers as they find their sea legs or sharing tips with seasoned travellers looking for their next adventure, we love offering advice that enhances the experience. From destination insights to Cruise Miles® memberships - of which we’ve introduced over 1,000 guests! - we’re always here to help.
Ultimately, it’s about making every ROL Cruise guest feel valued, supported and excited for the journey ahead. Seeing someone fall in love with cruising, just as we have, is the best feeling in the world.
What’s your top piece of advice for someone who is taking their first cruise?
J & C: Our top piece of advice for first-time cruisers is to take a good look at your itinerary before you set sail. It’s easy to focus on the exciting destinations, but it’s just as important to understand the flow of your journey - including how many sea days are included.
For example, an Atlantic crossing can take the best part of a week, and we’ve often met guests who didn’t realise quite how many days they’d be spending at sea. Sea days can be a wonderful part of the cruise experience - time to relax, explore the ship and enjoy the fantastic entertainment and activities on board - but it’s good to know in advance so you can plan accordingly.
J & L: Take a little time at the start of your journey to get to know your ship. Once you’ve boarded, explore the key areas - find the Guest Services Desk, locate the restaurants (and check your allocated table if dining is assigned), and get a feel for where everything is.
Then, most importantly - relax! Grab a drink, soak in the atmosphere and start enjoying your holiday. There’s no need to rush; cruising is all about unwinding and making the most of every moment.
Many guests love to make the most of their time in port - what are your best tips for planning shore excursions or exploring independently?
J & C: Do a little research before you set sail. Understanding your destination in advance will help you plan your day effectively - especially when it comes to getting around. Some ports are conveniently located within walking distance of the main attractions, while others may require a taxi, shuttle bus or local transport to reach the heart of the action.
If it’s our first time in a port, or if we’re visiting somewhere with unfamiliar surroundings or a language barrier, we always recommend booking a shore excursion through the cruise line. These excursions are carefully planned to make the most of your time ashore, and they come with the added peace of mind that you’ll be back on board in good time for departure.
For those who prefer to explore independently, it’s worth noting key details in advance - such as local transport options, currency requirements and any must-see sights. And, of course, always keep an eye on the all-aboard time!
J & L: There’s nothing quite like stepping ashore in a new destination, and with a little planning, you can make the most of every moment in port. One of the best resources on board is the ship’s guest speakers - they often provide fascinating insights into the destinations ahead. The Excursions Desk is also a fantastic place to gather information, whether you’re booking a tour or just looking for advice on getting around.
At our ROL Cruise Cocktail Party, we always encourage guests to come and chat with us if they’d like some local tips. Over the years, we’ve visited many ports, and we’re always happy to share our experience - whether it’s recommending a hidden gem, suggesting a great local cafe or offering advice on the best way to explore independently.
What are some little-known cruise tips that can help guests enhance their experience onboard?
J & C: One of the best ways to settle into life on board - especially if it’s your first cruise - is to get your bearings early. Cruise ships can be vast, and nothing causes more stress in those first few days than feeling a little lost!
A great tip is to familiarise yourself with the key places that matter most to you, whether that’s the restaurants, bars, theatre or spa. Pay attention to whether they’re located towards the bow (front), stern (back) or midship (middle) - this will help you navigate much more easily.
When it comes to cabins, there’s a simple trick to remember: cabin numbers usually start at the bow and increase towards the stern. Odd-numbered cabins are on one side of the ship, even numbers on the other - so if you ever find yourself going the wrong way, a quick check of the numbers will help you get back on track.
J & L: One of the most wonderful things about cruising is the chance to meet like-minded people and make new friends along the way. We see it happen on every sailing - guests start as strangers, but by the end of the cruise, they’re exchanging email addresses, sharing stories, and even planning their next adventure together!
A great way to connect with fellow cruisers is to join in with onboard activities. Whether it’s a lively quiz, a dance class, a crafting session or simply chatting over dinner, getting involved makes the experience even more special. The best friendships often start with a shared laugh over a tricky trivia question or a chance meeting at the bar.
You must have visited so many incredible destinations - do you have a favourite port or itinerary, and why?
J & C: We’ve been incredibly fortunate to visit so many breathtaking destinations over the years, but one itinerary that will always stand out is our very first cruise as ROL Cruise Ambassadors. We sailed alongside fellow Ambassadors Trish and Gordon Waller onboard Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ Balmoral and it was nothing short of spectacular.
The journey took us across the Atlantic from Southampton to Sydney, Nova Scotia, before we drifted south along the Eastern Seabord of the USA - a route packed with history, charm and unforgettable sights. From there, we explored the tropical beauty of the Bahamas, Bermuda and the Azores, each offering its own unique magic.
But the real highlight? New York. Arriving at dawn, we passed the Statue of Liberty, with the Manhattan skyline gradually emerging in the morning light - an absolutely breathtaking moment. The ship docked within walking distance of Times Square, giving us two full days to immerse ourselves in the city’s energy. From Broadway to Central Park, every moment was exhilarating.
And the sail away? Truly unforgettable. As the ship pulled away from the Big Apple, the entire ship came together, singing Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” - a moment of pure joy and camaraderie that still gives us goosebumps to this day.
J & L: We’ve been incredibly lucky to visit so many wonderful destinations over the years, each leaving us with unforgettable memories. It’s almost impossible to choose just one favourite!
South Africa stands out for its breathtaking scenery and incredible wildlife. There’s nothing quite like experiencing a safari - watching elephants roam freely or spotting a pride of lions in their natural habitat. The landscapes, from dramatic coastlines to vast savannahs, make every visit an adventure to remember.
But we also have a real soft spot for a destination much closer to home - Cadiz and Seville. Cadiz, with its charming old town and relaxed Spanish atmosphere, feels like a step back in time. And Seville, just a short journey away, is simply magical. The majestic Alcázar Palace, the stunning Cathedral and the lively flamenco rhythms capture the true essence of Spain. Strolling through the orange-scented streets, soaking up the culture and enjoying tapas in a hidden courtyard - it’s a place that always feels special.
What do you love most about cruising, and what keeps you passionate about your role as an Ambassador?
J & C: What we love most about cruising is the perfect balance of adventure and comfort. There’s nothing quite like waking up to a new, exciting destination each day, knowing that after a busy of exploring, you can return to the warm welcome of a friendly crew, exceptional dining and the comfort of your cabin. It’s this effortless way of travelling - seeing the world without ever having to pack and unpack - that makes cruising so special.
As ROL Cruise Ambassadors, our passion comes from helping guests turn their dream cruise into an unforgettable reality. We believe in the same high standards as ROL Cruise is known for - exceptional service, attention to detail and making sure every guest has the best experience possible. From the moment they step on board to the final sail-away, we love being part of their journey, offering guidance, reassurance and those extra little touches that make all the difference.
J & L: As ROL Cruise Ambassadors, our passion comes from sharing the cruising experience with both first-time cruisers and seasoned travellers. There’s something truly rewarding about watching those new to cruising fall in love with life at sea - seeing their excitement grow as they realise just how effortless, immersive and enjoyable a cruise can be. Before long, they’re just as hooked as we are!
We also love reconnecting with returning ROL Cruise guests, catching up on their latest adventures and helping them plan their next one. Cruising has a way of bringing people together, and being part of that journey - whether it’s offering advice, sharing stories or simply enjoying the camaraderie - is what makes our role so fulfilling.
Finally, what’s the one thing you always pack when you set sail?
J & C: One thing we never sail without is a travel alarm clock! When cruising across different time zones, your mobile phone can’t always be relied upon to update correctly - especially when out at sea. There’s nothing worse than waking up and realising your phone has switched to the wrong time overnight. Having a simple, battery-operated alarm clock ensures you’re always on schedule, whether it’s for an early morning excursion, a dinner reservation, or simply making sure you don’t miss the sail-away.
J & L: Clothes with a little bit of stretch - or at least remember to wear the smaller sizes first!
