Things to do in Fort Lauderdale before your cruise

Published on 05 Sep 2022

In the world of cruising, Fort Lauderdale is famous for its port, Port Everglades. As one of the busiest cruise ports in the world, Port Everglades features at the beginning and end of many Caribbean cruises. If you’re set to sail to one of the most idyllic destinations in the world, you may find yourself with a bit of time on your hands before departing. That’s where our guide to Fort Lauderdale steps in. Here, we take a look at 5 things you can do in Fort Lauderdale before your cruise to the Caribbean:

Things to do in Fort Lauderdale before your cruise

Admire flamingos at Flamingo Gardens

Just west of downtown Fort Lauderdale lies Flamingo Gardens, a 60-acre wildlife sanctuary home to more than 3,000 different plant and flower species and some of the world’s most precious species. The nonprofit organisation allows sick or injured animals to live in total comfort - you can expect to see bald eagles, bobcats, alligators, the elusive Florida panther and, of course, flamingos.

Explore Bonnet House Museum & Gardens

Built by artists Frederic and Evelyn Bartlett in 1920, Bonnet House Museum & Gardens is an enriching cultural experience filled with original art, peculiar carousel figurines, unique architecture and a beautiful flora courtyard. The 35-acre historic estate is so impressive it’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and for very good reason. A tour here will allow you to take a step back in time.

Go shopping at Las Olas Boulevard

Forgotten to pack something ahead of your cruise? Or simply want to shop until you drop? Las Olas Boulevard is the epicentre of Fort Lauderdale and a hub of entertainment. The decorative and eclectic street is filled with boutiques, luxury restaurants and coffee shops - just about everything a tourist would need can be found here. It’s a lovely spot to wander around in the early evening, after a long day of exploring.

Learn at the Museum of Discovery and Science

The Museum of Discovery and Science is one of the largest museums of its kind in Florida. Here, you can enjoy the substance of science along with the fun that comes with discovering astounding new concepts. The museum is one of the best attractions in Fort Lauderdale for families. Children will be fascinated by the EcoDiscovery Center and the Everglades Airboat Adventure and will find themselves getting lost in the wonder on display, while adults can marvel at the permanent exhibitions.

Wander around Hugh Taylor Birch State Park

Situated just north of Lauderdale Beach, Hugh Taylor Birch State Park is an escape to nature amidst the urban landscape. Known as Fort Lauderdale's Central Park, you can hike or cycle the two-mile loop of Hugh Taylor Birch State Park or simply relax as you watch the world go by. There’s even a playground for children, a BBQ to cook some delicious food or water, where you can paddle and take the time to cool down. The park is within walking distance of Bonnet House Museum & Gardens.
