Published on 23 Jan 2023

Photography and travel go hand in hand. Just look at Instagram, the travel hashtag (#travel) has been used more than 665 million times since the app was launched in 2010. But which landmarks appear on the grid more than others? Here, we look at five of the world’s most photographed landmarks:

What are the world’s most photographed landmarks?

Eiffel Tower

Paris, France

7,195,587 posts on Instagram

Known as the city of romance, Paris attracts more than 7 million visitors each year - all of which are posting the Eiffel Tower on Instagram, it seems! As one of the most famous landmarks in the world, it’s easy to see why the Eiffel Tower topped the list for most photographed too. The 1,082 feet tall structure towers over the heart of the French capital and gives tourists a fantastic opportunity to admire the stunning panoramic views of Paris.

Burj Khalifa

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

6,181,342 posts on Instagram

At 2,716 feet tall, you’d think Burj Khalifa would be hard to fit into a camera frame. But height hasn’t stopped almost 6.2 million people from posting the tallest building in the world on Instagram. Construction started on Burj Khalifa (which is home to two hotels, 900 exclusive permanent residences, a fine dining restaurant and the world’s highest lounge) in 2004, making it the youngest structure to feature on our list.

Louvre

Paris, France

3,679,779 posts on Instagram

Home to Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Louvre is the most visited art gallery in the world. Though it’s actually the exterior of the Louvre that allows it to claim the third spot among the world’s most photographed landmarks. During its long history, Louvre has been a medieval fortress, a King's residence and since 1793, a gallery home to an impressive collection of 537 works of art.

Big Ben

London, United Kingdom

3,262,566 posts on Instagram

Big Ben is as British as it gets. Arguably the most famous clock in the world, it sits at the north end of the Houses of Parliament, formally known as the Palace of Westminster. The UNESCO World Heritage site, which has been ticking since 1859, has been photographed over 3.2 million times on Instagram - it is a cultural icon and one of the most prominent symbols of the UK, after all.

Empire State Building

New York, United States of America

3,114,095 posts on Instagram

Located in the beating heart of the concrete jungle, New York’s Empire State Building holds the best views of the entire city. On a clear day, the 102-storey art deco skyscraper, which is located in Rockefeller Plaza, provides a view of five different states. But to actually take a snap of the building, head to neighbouring locations like the Rockefeller Centre or Madison Square Park.
