What to see in Cologne

Cologne, a city steeped in history and culture, is renowned for its architectural marvels, vibrant arts scene and the iconic Cologne Cathedral. Nestled along the Rhine River, this German city offers a blend of historical richness and modern vibrancy that captivates its visitors.

The Cologne Cathedral, or Kölner Dom, is the city’s most famous landmark. This stunning Gothic masterpiece, with its soaring twin spires, dominates the city’s skyline and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. A visit to the cathedral is a journey through centuries of history and artistry. The interior is as impressive as its exterior, with breathtaking stained glass windows, intricate stone carvings and the Shrine of the Three Kings, believed to hold the relics of the Three Wise Men. Visitors can also climb the 533 steps to the top of the south tower, where they are rewarded with panoramic views of Cologne and the Rhine River. The cathedral’s awe-inspiring presence and artistic significance make it a must-visit for anyone in Cologne.

A short walk from the cathedral is the Old Town, a charming area that embodies the spirit of Cologne. The Old Town, with its colourful buildings, narrow alleys and bustling squares, is a delight to explore. The Alter Markt and Heumarkt are central squares that pulse with life, hosting a variety of cafes, traditional breweries and shops. The Old Town is also home to historical landmarks such as the Great St. Martin Church and the Town Hall (Rathaus), Germany’s oldest town hall with a history dating back over 900 years. The numerous museums in the area, such as the Romano-Germanic Museum and the Ludwig Museum, showcase Cologne’s rich history and contemporary art. The Old Town’s blend of history, culture and lively atmosphere encapsulates the essence of Cologne.

No cruise to Cologne is complete without experiencing its famous Kölsch beer. This light, crisp beer is brewed only in Cologne and is served in unique, narrow glasses called Stangen. The city is dotted with traditional breweries, known as Brauhaus, where visitors can enjoy Kölsch along with local delicacies like Himmel un Ääd (black pudding with mashed potatoes and apple sauce) or Rheinischer Sauerbraten (marinated beef roast). These breweries are not just places to eat and drink; they are cultural institutions where people gather to enjoy good food, beer and the company of others. A Brauhaus tour can provide a deeper insight into the brewing process and the traditions surrounding Kölsch.
