View Cruise DealTromsø, with its captivating Arctic allure, is a city where the Northern Lights paint the winter sky and the Midnight Sun brightens endless summer nights.
The Northern Lights are one of Mother Nature’s masterpieces and the star attraction of Tromsø. Situated 400 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, this Norwegian city is one of the best places from which to see nature’s dazzling light shows. Have your camera at the ready – the sight of this beautiful, elusive and enigmatic phenomenon is something you’ll want to relive again and again.
Inspired by the landscapes of Northern Norway, the Arctic Cathedral has been built in such a way that it resembles a geometric glacier. Completed in 1965, this striking building still looks futuristic even now. During the summer months, the Cathedral hosts performances of beautiful Nordic choral music. With a design resembling ice floes that have been pressed up on land by the rough seas of the Arctic, the Polaria building is almost as striking as the Arctic Cathedral. An aquarium and museum all in one, Polaria makes a brilliant introduction to the city. Begin your visit by watching their excellent film explaining the Northern Lights phenomenon; then take a virtual trek through the frozen wilderness and experience an Arctic snowstorm. Complete your visit with a performance by the aquarium’s resident bearded seals.
For panoramic views over the city, take a cable car up to the top of Mount Storsteinen. At 420 metres above sea level, the mountain offers breathtaking views. While you’re there, treat yourself to a steaming mug of hot chocolate in front of the log fire at Fjellstua, an Alpine-style cafe on the mountain’s peak.
Make the most of your time in the Arctic by going husky sledging or on a whale safari. Various tour guides offer such experiences – simply ask us if a shore excursion can be added to your cruise itinerary. Wind down from your adventure with a visit to the Arctic-Alpine Botanic Garden, the world’s northernmost botanic garden. Thanks to Tromsø’s surprisingly moderate climate, the fragrant gardens are bursting with colour.
