What to see in Kagoshima

Kagoshima offers visitors a fascinating mix of natural beauty, rich history and modern attractions. Known for its stunning landscapes, hot springs and proximity to the active volcano Sakurajima, Kagoshima is a perfect destination for nature lovers and history buffs alike.

One of the top experiences in Kagoshima is to visit Sakurajima, the famous active volcano that dominates the city’s skyline. Known for its dramatic eruptions and constant activity, Sakurajima is both a natural wonder and a symbol of the region. Visitors can take a ferry across the bay from the city to get a closer look at the volcano. The ferry ride offers stunning views of the bay and the city’s waterfront, with the looming presence of Sakurajima in the background. Once on the island, there are several spots to explore, including the Yunohira Observatory, which provides a panoramic view of the volcano and the surrounding area. The observation deck allows visitors to get a closer look at the steaming craters and the expansive volcanic landscape. You can also visit Sakurajima Lava Nagisa Park, which is located along the coastline, where you can enjoy a peaceful walk along the beach and observe the unique lava formations from past eruptions. If you’re interested in learning more about the region’s volcanic activity, the Sakurajima Visitor Centre offers informative exhibits and videos about the volcano’s history and ongoing eruptions.

For those interested in the history and culture of Kagoshima, a visit to Sengan-en Garden is highly recommended. This beautiful Japanese garden is located on the outskirts of the city and offers a peaceful retreat with stunning views of Sakurajima. The garden was originally built in the early 1600s as a private residence for the Shimazu family, who were the lords of the Satsuma Domain. The garden blends traditional Japanese design with the natural beauty of its surroundings, featuring tranquil ponds, lush greenery and a variety of plants and flowers that change with the seasons. One of the highlights of the garden is the Shiroyama Observatory, which offers a breathtaking view of both the garden and Sakurajima across the bay. The garden also features historical buildings such as the Shimazu family’s former residence and a tea house where you can relax and enjoy a cup of matcha tea. Sengan-en is also home to a museum that displays artefacts and exhibits related to the Shimazu family’s history and the Satsuma Domain.

Ibusuki is another must-visit destination near Kagoshima, known for its unique hot spring baths. Ibusuki is famous for its sand baths, where visitors bury themselves in warm sand that is naturally heated by the area’s hot springs. These baths are said to have therapeutic benefits, promoting relaxation and helping with various skin conditions. After enjoying the sand bath, you can take a dip in one of the more traditional hot spring baths to relax further. Ibusuki also offers beautiful coastal views and has several scenic spots to explore, such as Mount Kaimon, which is often called the “Fuji of the Satsuma” due to its drinking resemblance to Mount Fuji. The area is known for its tranquil, spa-like atmosphere, making it a great place for a relaxing getaway.
