Linz has been a part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network since 2014 and it combines incredible classic and modern architecture, historical buildings and beautiful gardens. As you stroll down the city’s streets, you’ll come across the Old Cathedral and the New Cathedral. The Old Cathedral was constructed by Jesuits in 1669 in a Baroque style with impressive domed towers that’ll leave you in awe. The New Cathedral is the largest in Austria. Built in 1924 with a capacity of 20,000 people, the cathedral's glass windows and inner gallery are an architectural masterpiece.
Want to see the oldest church in Austria? Head to Martinskirche, an 8th-century church in Carolingian architecture that is excellently preserved. It was built on the remains of Roman walls, which are still visible outside, while inside, you can still see Roman inscriptions and a painting of the famous Volto Santo sculpture in Lucca, Italy. Juve above Martinskirche lies the magnificent and opposing Linz Castle from which you can see the remains of a fortress from the 9th century. The castle was rebuilt after a fire in 1800 but its architecture still remains breathtaking. It’s now home to Schlossmuseum, which houses incredible historical collections and art dating back to prehistoric, Roman and medieval periods.
If you want to balance all the history out, why not take a peek into the future? With a dazzling exterior, Ars Electronica Centre is one of the most fascinating places in Linz. Explore different types of advanced technology and learn a thing or two about what the future may hold.
Linz is also home to a botanical garden that looks a lot like heaven. Located outside of the city’s centre, the garden is home to over 10,000 different species of plants and flowers accompanied by sculptures by Austrian artists.
