ROL Cruise recommends…

1. Be inspired by the birthplace of Bollywood

Movie lovers are in for a treat, as Mumbai is widely regarded as the home of Indian cinema – from silent films to ‘talkies’, for years the city has played host to some of the most vibrant and creative artforms to come out of India. Today Mumbai plays host to revered film festivals, but the connection between the city and cinema was born around a century ago. Film buffs can explore this heritage at the Bollywood Museum.

2.  Stop for a snap at the Gateway of India

When it comes to people-watching with a view, no spots come much finer than the Gateway of India. A popular meeting place for locals, the impressive archway was built to commemorate the visit of King George V in 1911 but was not completed until thirteen years later, in 1924.

3.  Be awed by Elephanta Island

Have you got a hunger for history? Then be sure to take a boat out from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Island, a labyrinthine collection of cave temples housing some of India’s best carvings. Built between AD 450 and 750, the site is a jaw-dropping example of religious architecture and well worth a visit for the six metre-tall statue of Sadasiva alone.

4. Come face to face with a leopard at Sanjay Gandhi National Park

If you’ve got an afternoon or more to spare, be sure to head to Sanjay Gandhi National Park – a tropical forest teeming with wildlife, butterflies, exotic plants and even leopards. Take in the scenic lakes and waterfalls, and don’t leave before visiting the Kanheri Caves: a collection of more than 100 monastic buildings and homes built for monks over the course of 1,000 years. It may be a 90-minute trip outside of the city, but you won’t regret making the journey!

5. Kids of all ages will have fun at EsselWorld

Whether you’re travelling alone or have brought your kids along for the ride,  fans of adventure will enjoy an hour or two spent at this popular amusement park. Not only does it offer a wide array of recognizable rides and attractions, but it hosts a bowling alley, ice skating rink and dance floor. Not one for traditionalists, perhaps, but an attraction sure to be popular with thrill-seekers young and old!
