View Cruise DealNafplion, a coastal gem on Greece's Peloponnese peninsula, enchants with its historic charm. Its old town boasts neoclassical architecture, winding alleys and lively squares. Surrounded by medieval fortresses and nestled on the Argolic Gulf, Nafplion offers a tranquil blend of history, culture and breathtaking coastal beauty.
Nafplion’s Old Town, often referred to as Nafplio, is a labyrinthine maze of narrow cobblestone streets, neoclassical buildings and charming squares. As you step into this enchanting district, you'll feel as though you've been transported back in time. Begin your exploration at the iconic Syntagma Square, a picturesque square surrounded by elegant buildings, outdoor cafes and a neoclassical mosque-turned-municipal museum. The square is the heart of Nafplion and a perfect starting point for your journey.
Near Nafplion, you'll find two remarkable archaeological sites that offer a glimpse into Greece's ancient past: Tiryns and Epidaurus. Tiryns, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an ancient Mycenaean citadel located just a short drive from Nafplion. It is renowned for its massive Cyclopean walls, which are made of massive stone blocks and provide a testament to the architectural prowess of the Mycenaean civilisation. The archaeological site of Tiryns includes a palace complex, a megaron (great hall) and a series of chambers. You can explore the ruins, walk along the walls and learn about the rich history and mythology associated with this ancient citadel.
Nafplion is blessed with pristine beaches along the Argolic Gulf, providing opportunities for relaxation and water activities. Two of the most inviting beaches near the town are Karathona Beach and Tolo Beach. Karathona Beach, located just a short drive from Nafplion, is a beautiful stretch of golden sand and crystalline waters. The beach is well-organised, offering sunbeds, umbrellas and water sports facilities. Its shallow waters make it ideal for swimming, and the surrounding hills create a picturesque backdrop. Karathona Beach is also known for the Palamidi Castle, which overlooks the beach and adds a touch of historical intrigue to the landscape. You can combine a visit to the beach with a stop at the castle for a panoramic view of the coastline.
