When it comes to cruising, planning the perfect holiday doesn’t stop at booking your dream itinerary - it also means ensuring you’re fully protected with the right travel insurance. At ROL Cruise, we want every part of your journey to be seamless and stress-free, which is why we’ve partnered with Just Travel Cover, an award-winning travel insurance broker specialising in cruise holidays and pre-existing medical conditions.

Whether you’re setting sail around the Mediterranean or embarking on a world cruise, having the right cover is vital. From medical emergencies at sea to missed ports and cancellation cover, cruise-specific insurance offers peace of mind so you can focus on enjoying your holiday. To help you get started, we’ve compiled a handy checklist and answered some frequently asked questions to guide you through the essentials of cruise travel insurance.

Travel insurance checklist:

✔ Ensure your policy covers cruises - not all travel insurance policies do

✔ Ensure insurance covers the cost of your holiday (for cancellation purposes) - tip: limits are usually per person

✔ Ensure insurance covers each destination you are visiting (if taking single-trip insurance)

✔ Ensure insurance covers the full length of your trip, from the day you leave home until the day you return

✔ Ensure your policy covers a minimum of £2m medical and repatriation

✔ Ensure you declare all pre-existing medical conditions and answer the medical questionnaire

Frequently asked questions:

Which travel insurance company do you recommend?

We have partnered with the award-winning travel insurance provider Just Travel Cover to help our guests find appropriate travel insurance.

Just Travel Cover is a broker with a panel of insurers covering all ages and specialising in people with pre-existing medical conditions going on cruises. Each policy they offer is different and has different acceptance criteria, cover limits, exclusions and benefits.

Why should I choose Just Travel Cover?

All insurers on Just Travel Cover’s ‘panel’ cover cruises and all provide cruise-specific benefits in addition to cover for cancellation, medical emergencies and baggage.

While many insures will only offer cover for holidays booked up to 12 months in advance, Just Travel Cover have policies that provide cover up to 18 months in advance (subject to acceptance criteria).

In recent years, Just Travel Cover has helped thousands of our customers find appropriate travel insurance, with 94% leaving a four or five-star review.

What does cruise insurance cover that a standard policy does not?

Some insurers do not cover cruises and will carry a ‘general exclusion’ for things that may occur while cruising.

Ensuring your policy has cruise cover is crucial, as it means all sections of your policy are operative while on a cruise. At Just Travel Cover, all policies cover cruises, provided you tick to confirm you are cruising during the application process, and all have additional cruise-specific benefits, too.

When should I arrange travel insurance?

It’s important to start looking at prices once you’ve booked, to ensure you can get insurance, particularly if it’s a long cruise, visiting worldwide destinations and/or you have pre-existing medical conditions.

It’s always a good idea to arrange your travel insurance as soon as you’ve booked your trip, as cancellation cover on single-trip policies starts from the day you purchase your policy.

Booking early means a cancellation claim can be submitted. For example, if a change in health means you are no longer fit to travel, you may be able to claim insurance for monies paid, subject to policy terms and conditions. It also means you can get back to planning your trip with peace of mind.

What are the main benefits of cruise travel insurance?

The main benefits of travel insurance are cancellation cover, which starts immediately on single trip policies, emergency medical expenses (including repatriation), and cover for lost, stolen, or damaged baggage. In addition, there are cruise benefits like missed port departure, cabin confinement, unused excursions, and itinerary changes—these are subject to each insurer’s T&Cs.

Do I need to declare each country on my travel insurance?

Most people opt for single-trip insurance, which requires a list of each country visited. Medical treatment and transport costs can vary from country to country, so insurers need to know where you’re visiting so they can price the policy accordingly.

For annual policies, you can simply select Europe or worldwide cover.

Does travel insurance cover missed ports?

Every insurer will have different covers, terms and conditions. For example, Just Travel Cover has insurers that can provide missed port departure cover up to £2,000.

Does travel insurance cover high-value cruises?

Every insurer has different cancellation limits, and you should consider the value of your trip and how important cancellation cover is to you when assessing this.

Just Travel Cover has policies that provide up to £12,500 per person. For cruises over £12,500 per person, they can consider an additional ‘top-up cancellation’ policy, depending on the circumstances, up to £50,000 per person.
