Preparing to embark on the trip of a lifetime is an incredibly exciting time. From researching dreamy destinations and envisaging yourself unwinding on unspoilt beaches or curating a must-do list for the iconic cities on your itinerary to visiting the shops to purchase holiday essentials and packing your case, the journey begins long before you set sail. With so much to plan and look forward to, it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement and overlook the importance of ensuring your trip is adequately protected. You’ve likely encountered the terms ABTA and ATOL before, but understanding what they mean and why they matter is essential. Here, we tell you everything you need to know about ABTA, ATOL and why you should ensure your travel provider is protected.

Everything you need to know about ABTA and ATOL protection

What does ABTA protected mean?

ABTA, which stands for the Association of British Travel Agents, is the UK’s largest travel association, representing travel agents, tour operators, and the wider travel industry. ABTA protection means you are financially protected when you book a non-flight-based package holiday. If the travel company went out of business or suffered financial difficulties, you would be entitled to a refund for your holiday. Similarly, if you were abroad and the travel company ceased operations, ABTA would cover the costs of your transportation back home.

Why is it important to be ABTA protected?

Booking with an ABTA member provides reassurance and peace of mind for your travel plans. ABTA members adhere to a strict Code of Conduct, ensuring high standards, while ABTA itself provides expert advice and reliable guidance. For over 70 years, ABTA has provided travellers with advice, guidance and support. By working closely with members, ABTA aims to build a more sustainable travel industry where people can relax and enjoy peace of mind when booking with an ABTA member.

What does ATOL protected mean?

ATOL, short for Air Travel Organisers License, is a financial protection scheme designed to safeguard you when booking a package holiday that includes flights. If your travel company ceases trading while you’re abroad, ATOL steps in to help. They may ensure you can continue your trip by covering your holiday accommodation when possible. They will also reimburse you for expenses incurred in replacing ATOL-protected parts of your journey. Depending on the circumstances, they can also assist with arranging flights home.

Why is it important to be ATOL protected?

Booking with an ATOL-protected travel company provides peace of mind and financial security. Established in 1973, ATOL was introduced in response to the growing popularity of overseas travel, ensuring customers are safeguarded against financial loss or being stranded abroad.

Do I still need travel insurance?

ABTA and ATOL protection differ from travel insurance, and you must still ensure adequate travel insurance before travelling. Travel insurance does not just cover trip cancellations; it can also cover medical emergencies, lost luggage and much more.
