What to pack for an Antarctica cruise with HX

Advice on what to pack for Antarctica from ROL Cruise team member Amber

Travelling to a polar region for the first time, such as Antarctica, can feel overwhelming - especially when deciding what to pack. Fortunately, HX provides fantastic support to help you prepare for your adventure in cooler climates.

Here’s a handy guide to get you started.

Keep it simple: Less is more

It’s easy to assume you’ll need to pack a lot for your polar trip, but that’s not the case. Packing strategically is key. Start with base layers - these are essential for staying warm. Invest in high-quality thermal leggings, a thermal top (whether it’s a vest, long-sleeve t-shirt or long johns), and thermal socks. These items will form the foundation of your outfits for excursions ashore.

Think waterproof

Staying warm and dry is crucial, so waterproof gear is a must. Waterproof trousers are essential for landings, and HX makes things easier by providing all guests with a complimentary wind - and waterproof jacket, along with sturdy boots for Antarctica landings. This thoughtful addition means you’ll have fewer items to pack.

Layers are key

Layering is the best way to stay comfortable in the ever-changing polar climate. Add thin layers over your base layers to help retain warmth while giving you the flexibility to remove a layer if you get too warm. Keep in mind that activities like walking through thick snow can be more strenuous than expected, so being able to adjust your outfit is important.

Unexpected essentials

One item you might not think to pack is swimwear. HX ships have a sauna, pool, and hot tub onboard, which are perfect for relaxing after a chilly excursion. And, if you’re brave enough to attempt a polar plunge, you’ll need your swimsuit for that unforgettable experience!

Stay comfortable onboard

Keep in mind that you’ll only need to layer up for outdoor activities and deck time. The ship itself is wonderfully cosy, so you can relax in comfort when you’re inside. The Explorer Lounge is an ideal spot to warm up with a hot drink or enjoy something cool while you take in the breathtaking views.

Don’t forget accessories

The right accessories can make all the difference. Make sure to pack:

  • Gloves: Waterproof gloves are highly recommended.
  • A warm hat: Opt for one that covers your ears for extra protection.
  • A snood or neck gaiter: Ideal for keeping your face warm in cold winds.
  • Sunglasses: Polarised sunglasses are essential to protect your eyes from the intense sun reflecting off the snow.
  • Sunscreen: Use an effective SPF to shield your skin from the harsh UV rays.
  • Ski goggles: These are a great addition, as they pair well with a snood to prevent your glasses from fogging up.
