Austria, officially the Republic of Austria, is a landlocked East Alpine country in the southern part of Central Europe. Situated in the beautiful Wachau Valley, Melk is a small riverside town with a historic core. Its showstopper is Melk Abbey, which watches over the town and surrounding Danube River from atop a hill. Built in the 11th century, this lavish building was once home to Benedictine monks. Today, it is open for guided tours where you can walk around the grounds and discover the museum, marble hall, library and church.
