Austria, officially the Republic of Austria, is a landlocked East Alpine country in the southern part of Central Europe. It is bordered by Germany to the northwest, the Czech Republic to the north, Slovakia to the northeast, Hungary to the east, Slovenia and Italy to the south and Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west.
More famous composers have lived in Vienna than anywhere else in the world. And it’s easy to see why! Thought to be the music capital of the world, Vienna attracts musical fanatics from all over. While here, why not try and enjoy some musical entertainment? Whether that’s watching an opera or listening to an orchestra in a concert hall, there’s plenty on offer and a cruise to Austria really is incomplete without live music.
Krems an der Donau (known more commonly as Krems) is situated at the meeting point of the River Krems and the Danube River. Once a fortress, Krems was made into a town in the 12th century and many of its medieval fortifications remain today. Keep an eye out for Gozzoburg, the Pulverturm and Steiner Gate.
Renowned for its contemporary art and cultural scene, Linz is a fascinating city where the past and future harmonically coexist. Part of the UNESCO Creative Cities since 2014, Linz combines incredible classic and modern architecture, historical buildings and beautiful gardens. A city certainly not to be missed.
The hills are alive with the sound of music. Most people around the world know Salzburg as it was the filming location for one of the most famous films of all time, The Sound of Music. Although it’s unlikely you’ll see Maria dancing in the distance, we can promise the city will be just as beautiful as you hoped. With baroque architecture and copper spires, it feels like a location from a real-life fairy-tale.
Situated in the beautiful Wachau Valley, Melk is a small riverside town with a historic core. Its showstopper is Melk Abbey, which watches over the town and surrounding Danube River from atop a hill. Built in the 11th century, this lavish building was once home to Benedictine monks. Today, it is open for guided tours where you can walk around the grounds and discover the museum, marble hall, library and church.
