ROL Cruise recommends…

Step back in time in Rome, Florence and Pisa

It’s no secret that Italy holds the key to some truly fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Sites. On your cruise to Italy, experience the grandeur of Rome’s Colosseum, the beauty of the Roman Forum and the artistic splendour of the Pantheon, all easily reached via the port city of Civitavecchia. The historic centre of Florence is in itself a World Heritage Site, and considered a symbol of the Renaissance. Here, you can also visit the iconic Florence Cathedral, while closer to the cruise port of Livorno, the Leaning Tower of Pisa awaits.

Holiday like a film star on the Amalfi Coast

This 50km-stretch of coastline is one of the most spectacular in the world. Crumbling, colourful buildings are stacked up into the clifftops, before giving way to turquoise water. The Amalfi Coast is considered one of the most exclusive destinations in Italy, with Hollywood stars regularly showing their faces in the area. Wander through the streets of Amalfi or neighbouring towns such as Sorrento and Positano to get a sense of classic Italian culture. Stop for a slice of pizza or a glass of the region’s speciality – limoncello. Don’t miss out on visiting the stunning Amalfi Cathedral, built in the 9th century in the heart of the town.

Weave through the canals of Venice

Made up of more than 100 small islands in the Adriatic Sea, Venice is one of the world’s most iconic holiday destinations. With no roads, locals travel through the city only via canals. Renaissance and Gothic architecture can be found throughout Venice, which, combined with its quaint bridges, bustling restaurants and gondolas, make it wonderfully unique. On your Italian cruise, Venice is a must-see, and we challenge you not to fall head over heels for the city.

Indulge in fine food

We’d be lying if we said food wasn’t a crucial part of your cruise to Italy. The country is world-renowned for its authentic Neapolitan pizza, gelato, risotto and decadent tiramisu. We’d certainly recommend that you always leave room for an extra plate or bite after your meal, as there’s so much to be tempted by. For the original Neapolitan pizza, visit the coastal city of Naples and look out for pizzerias displaying the sign ‘Vera Pizza Napoletana’ which means, ‘True Neapolitan Pizza’. This isn’t just a gimmick, it’s recognition by the True Neapolitan Standards Association.

Visit the smallest state in the world

Home to just 1,000 people, Vatican City is the smallest state the world by both area and population. And yet, within the parameters of this tiny state are some of the world’s most revered historical and cultural sites. The Sistine Chapel, incorporating works by Michelangelo and Botticelli, is a true highlight, as is St Peter’s Basilica, a breath-taking example of Italian Renaissance architecture. Vatican City is itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is well worth a visit during your Italian cruise holiday.
