View Cruise DealAkita is known for its natural beauty, rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality. From exploring scenic landscapes to discovering unique cultural experiences, there are many things to do in Akita that will leave a lasting impression.
One of Akita’s must-see attractions is Akita Senshu Park. This park is a beautiful spot that blends nature and history. It is located in the centre of the city and features a lovely landscape with ponds, gardens and old structures. The park was once part of the grounds of Kubota Castle, the home of the Satake family, who ruled Akita during the feudal period. The castle’s keep no longer stands, but remnants of the stone walls and gates are still visible. As you stroll through the park, you can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, especially in the spring when the cherry blossoms bloom. The park also features lush greenery during the summer and autumn, offering a perfect place for a relaxing walk. It is not only a historical site but also a lovely place to appreciate nature and take in the seasonal changes.
Next, make sure to visit Kanto Matsuri, one of the most famous festivals in Akita. Held every August, this vibrant event celebrates the harvest season and is named after the “kanto” or long bamboo poles decorated with lanterns. During the festival, people balance these large poles, which can weigh up to 50 kilograms, on their shoulders and foreheads, demonstrating impressive strength and skill. The festival features colourful parades, performances and traditional music, creating a lively atmosphere that fills the streets of Akita. The spectacle of the Kanto Festival, with its illuminated poles and the energetic performances of local participants, provides a great opportunity to experience Akita’s unique traditions. This event also showcases the region’s local food, so be sure to try Akita’s specialities such as “Kritianpo,” a delicious dish made of mashed rice formed into sticks and grilled over an open flame.
Finally, Lake Tazawa is another must-visit destination. Located just outside Akita, Lake Tazawa is Japan’s deepest lake and is famous for its stunning beauty. The lake is surrounded by lush mountains and forests, offering breathtaking views all year round. In the warmer months, visitors can enjoy boating, swimming or relaxing by the water. The lake’s clear, blue water reflects the surrounding landscape, making it a great spot for photography. You can also take a leisurely walk along the lake’s shoreline or enjoy a peaceful moment at the nearby hot springs, which are known for their therapeutic properties. Another famous sight near Lake Tazawa is the statue of Tatsuko, a legend connected to the lake. According to the local folklore, Tatsuko was a beautiful woman who wished to remain young forever but was transformed into a dragon at the lake after her wish went unanswered. The statue, situated by the lake, is a symbol of this tale and a popular spot for visitors.
