What to see in Bergen

Cruises Departing from Bergen

Bergen is a popular departure point for cruises, offering stunning voyages through Norway's majestic fjords and along its rugged coastline. Cruise lines like Hurtigruten and Silversea operate from Bergen, often including stops at charming coastal towns, remote islands, and iconic fjords like Geirangerfjord and Sognefjord. These cruises provide passengers with an unparalleled opportunity to witness cascading waterfalls, dramatic cliffs, and quaint villages, all while enjoying the comforts of a modern ship. Many cruises explore further afield, sailing north to the Arctic Circle or venturing into the British Isles. Departing from Bergen allows travellers to experience the natural beauty of Norway's coast, combined with the city's rich cultural heritage.

References to Bergern-born Edvard Grieg are scattered around the globally celebrated composer’s former home town. Considered one of the leading Romantic era composers, he wrote and arranged numerous classical pieces, sometimes setting them with lyrics by the likes of Hans Christian Anderson and Rudyard Kipling. A visit to the Edvard Grieg Museum in Troldhaugen is a rousing way to discover and appreciate his musical legacy. Explore the beautiful home, complete with his original Steinway piano and composer’s hut, view a life-sized bronze statue on the grounds and then enjoy a piano concert in the turf-roofed Troldsalen chamber music hall.

The closely-packed, slightly precarious-looking, wooden townhouses and narrow alleyways of Bryggen are a haven for artists, potters and jewellers. A colourful must-see by the old wharf, the buildings of Bergen’s oldest quarter were once used to store dried fish and are recognised on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Though some of the originals fell foul to fire and had to be rebuilt, they remain an iconic must-see. Soak up the atmosphere of this creative waterfront community, pick up a unique Norwegian treasure from one of the boutiques or savour a coffee break in stunning surroundings. Stop off at the Bryggen Museum to learn about the historic Bryggen runic inscriptions found in the stone cellars of an area destroyed by fire.

Seven mountains surround bergen, though Fløyen is undoubtedly the most well-known. The 850-metre-long Fløibanen electric cable funicular ascends its slopes, bringing captivated visitors 320 metres above sea level to embrace spectacular views of the area. Jump on the funicular from the city centre to enjoy the panoramic views or to tuck into a delicious meal at the Fløien folkerestaurant overlooking the city and fjords. The highest point, Fløyfjellet, is a short hike away at 399m above sea level. Other marked hiking trails will take you to nearby Varggen or over Vidden to Ulriken.
