Chile’s fjords run roughly between the Reloncaví Estuary and Cape Horn, which is right at the southernmost point of the country. Travelling along this grand route, you could be forgiven for thinking you were in another world, thanks to the sheer majesty of the untouched scenery all around you.
Some of the birds endemic to the Chilean fjords, and amongst those you may spot on your trip, are the chucao tapaculo and the Patagonian sierra finch. Keep your eye out for the white-throated treerunner, the Andean condor and the Chilean flamingo.
Also native to the Chilean fjords is the charming Magellanic penguin. A sociable breed, these beautiful creatures live in colonies on the beaches, so you have a good chance of spotting them on your journey. You may even grab a glimpse of them hunting for cuttlefish and squid in the icy cold waters.
It’s important to note that the weather can be very changeable during a trip along Chile’s fjords. Therefore it’s advised that you wear lots of layers to keep you warm, but which can be discarded should the temperature rise. The sun can also be extremely strong, meaning an appropriate sunscreen is highly recommended while you’re on your voyage.
