When you think of Copenhagen, you probably picture brightly coloured townhouses lining a canal; this is Nyhavn (New Harbour), Copenhagen’s most photographed district and a great place to go for an evening walk or afternoon stroll. Look out for number 20 - this is where Hans Christian Andersen wrote several of his fairy tales, including The Princess and the Pea. When it’s time for a break from walking, step inside one of the district’s smart bars or cosy restaurants.
Shopaholics will adore Strøget, Europe’s longest pedestrianised shopping street. The main thoroughfare features flagship stores by some of the world’s biggest brands, while the side streets are dotted with the chic design boutiques that have become synonymous with the city. When you need a bite to eat, head to one of the city’s many top restaurants to sample the trendy New Nordic cuisine that has made the city a firm favourite with foodies.
The magnificent Rosenborg Castle was built by one of the most famous Scandinavian monarchs, King Charles IV, and was used as a royal residence until around 1710. Today, the Renaissance-style Castle is open to the public for tours and houses a museum exhibiting the Royal Collections. Highlights include the Crown Jewels, the Throne Chair of Denmark and the Danish Crown Regalia. After you visit, relax in the beautiful King’s Garden - the country’s oldest royal garden.
