How to get to Newcastle

Located in the North East of England, Newcastle is a popular UK cruise port with much more to offer its visitors than its vast harbour. During the Industrial Revolution, the university city was a major shipbuilding and manufacturing hub. Today, it is a centre of business, arts and sciences. From the Angel of the North to Newcastle Castle, the city has plenty of things to explore before you set sail around the world.

Just 10 miles from the city centre, the Port of Tyne is the ideal starting point for your next no-fly cruise. Blessed with fantastic rail and road connections, Newcastle’s port is easy to get to. Only 20 minutes from Newcastle Central Station, you can comfortably reach the cruise terminal from any of your intercity services from Edinburgh, York and more. Alternatively, you can drive along the A1 and be confident in leaving your car in the secure port parking.

Things to do in Newcastle

Newcastle has lots to see and do. If you’ve got time to spare before embarking your chosen cruise ship, why not check out Tyne Bridge, one of Newcastle’s most iconic structures? Officially opened in 1928, the bridge has become a defining symbol of Tyneside and, at 194 feet high, is ranked as the tenth tallest structure in the city.

From one symbolic structure to another, Sage Gateshead is an international music centre and renowned conference and event venue designed for artists, audiences and for the North. The iconic building, designed by renowned architects Foster + Partners, is home to Royal Northern Sinfonia and is a place where emerging artists are nurtured through dedicated programmes and festivals. The architecture alone makes it well worth a visit but there’s also a broad program of productions for the music-lovers. Located not far from Sage Gateshead is the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, where exhibitions, activities and opportunities explore our understanding of the world through diverse contemporary art by artists from across the world. Visitors are welcomed free of charge.

Forgotten to pack something or simply fancy doing a spot of shopping? Eldon Square is Newcastle’s most well-known shopping centre and is home to many popular brands.

Destination highlights

Newcastle port is your gateway to discovering the world’s most beautiful and dynamic landscapes. Discover the land of the Midnight Sun on a cruise to Norway. Steeped in fascinating history, Norway provides breathtaking fjords, ornate houses and endless flora and fauna.

Equally as beautiful, Iceland needs no introduction. The utter beauty and awe-inspiring vistas that lie before your eyes are not to be taken for granted. This snow-capped island is a hotspot for those looking to tick some worldly sights off their bucket list; watch as the northern lights dance above your head, marvel at active volcanoes, take a dip in the Blue Lagoon or wander around Reykjavík.

Wherever you decide to go, Newcastle will ensure a stress-free experience with a cruise type for everyone.
