What to see in Fukuoka

Fukuoka is a vibrant city with a fascinating blend of modernity and tradition. As one of the largest cities in Japan, it offers a wide array of things to see and do, from exploring ancient temples to enjoying delicious food.

One of the top attractions in Fukuoka is Ohori Park, a beautiful urban park known for its large central pond and scenic walking paths. Located in the heart of the city, it’s a perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of Fukuoka and relax. The park is designed with a spacious layout, featuring gardens, bridges and a peaceful atmosphere that’s ideal for a leisurely stroll or a picnic. You can rent a paddleboat to glide across the tranquil waters, taking in the view of the surrounding greenery and the impressive Fukuoka Castle ruins on the hillside. The park is also home to a traditional Japanese garden, showcasing beautiful landscapes with seasonal flowers, trees and koi ponds. In the spring, the park becomes a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing, attracting locals and tourists alike.

Another unmissable experience is a visit to Fukuoka Castle and its surrounding grounds. While the castle itself is mostly in ruins today, the site is steeped in history and offers visitors an interesting look into Fukuoka’s past. Fukuoka Castle was built in the early 1600s during the Edo period and once stood as one of Japan’s largest and most important castles. Today, the castle is an excellent spot for both history lovers and nature enthusiasts. The surrounding Maizuru Park, which was originally part of the castle grounds, is one of the city’s largest parks and is perfect for a relaxing stroll. From the top of the castle’s stone walls, you can enjoy stunning views of Fukuoka City, the surrounding area and the sea in the distance. The park is also home to several historical markers and small museums that provide insights into the castle’s fascinating history. During the cherry blossom season, the park comes alive with thousands of blooming sakura trees, creating a picturesque scene that is perfect for a peaceful walk or a photography session.

Fukuoka’s food scene is something every visitor should experience. The city is famous for its local dishes, especially Hakata ramen, a rich and flavourful noodle soup that originated in Fukuoka. The ramen features thin, firm noodles served in a creamy, pork-based broth called tonkotsu. It’s often topped with sliced pork, green onions and sometimes a boiled egg. You can enjoy this delicious dish at one of the many ramen shops throughout the city, but for a truly authentic experience, head to the yatai (food stalls) along the city’s riverside. These outdoor food stalls offer a variety of traditional dishes in a casual, lively setting. In addition to Hakata ramen, the yatai also serve a range of other local specialities, including grilled skewers, tempura and fresh seafood. The atmosphere at these food stalls is vibrant, with locals and tourists alike enjoying their meals in an open-air environment, making it a great way to experience the city’s culinary culture. Don’t forget to try other regional dishes like motsunabe (a hot pot dish made with beef or pork tripe) and goya champuru (a stir-fried bitter melon dish), both of which are local favourites.
