What to see in Ísafjörður

Ísafjörður, cradled by the dramatic Westfjords, offers visitors an intimate encounter with Iceland’s raw and untamed beauty.

Just a short boat ride from Ísafjörður port, Vigur Island is a serene oasis famed for its incredible birdlife. As you disembark onto this idyllic island, the cacophony of seabirds fills the air, a natural symphony that includes puffins, arctic terns and eider ducks. The island hosts only one farm, which harvests eiderdown, offering an intriguing insight into sustainable farming practices that have been honed over centuries. The tour around Vigur allows you to step back in time; you can visit Iceland's smallest post office and a beautifully preserved 19th-century windmill, the only one in the country. Stroll through lush pathways and appreciate the meticulously maintained historical buildings, all while surrounded by a 360-degree panorama of the fjord’s imposing mountains.

Embark on a scenic drive through the Westfjords to witness the stunning Dynjandi waterfall, the largest in the region. The waterfall is a series of cascades, each with its own distinct character, collectively resembling a bridal veil as they flow over the stepped rock formations. The roar of the water and the misty spray create an invigorating atmosphere that's both refreshing and awe-inspiring. On your way back to Ísafjörður, explore the small fishing villages that dot the landscape. These hamlets are steeped in history and often feature little museums and cosy cafes where you can enjoy traditional Icelandic pastries. Each community, with its colourful houses and local tales, adds another layer to the rich tapestry of life in the Westfjords.

For the adventurous spirit, kayaking in the calm waters of the fjords near Ísafjörður is an absolute must. Don a drysuit and paddle out into the stillness of the morning, when the water can be so clear that the distinction between sea and sky becomes blurred. Gliding on the water allows for an up-close experience with marine wildlife, including seals who often curiously observe visitors. As you navigate through the fjord, the sense of solitude is profound; the sheer cliffs and distant waterfalls only add to the sense of isolation from the modern world. Guides often share stories of the fjords, offering insights into the geology and folklore of this enchanting area.
