What to see in Ishigaki Island

Ishigaki Island is a tropical paradise renowned for its beautiful beaches, crystal-clear waters and lush landscapes. The island offers a range of activities that blend nature, culture and adventure, making it a must-visit destination for travellers.

One of the most popular activities on Ishigaki Island is exploring the beautiful beaches and waters. The island is home to some of Japan’s most stunning beaches, where you can enjoy activities like snorkelling, swimming and lounging under the sun. One of the most famous beaches is Kabira Bay, known for its emerald-green waters and stunning scenery. The bay is a designated national park, and though swimming is not allowed, you can take a boat ride to enjoy the breathtaking views. Visitors can also take glass-bottom boat tours, which will enable you to see the underwater coral reefs and marine life without getting wet. If you’re looking for a more active beach experience, head to Yarabama Beach or Sukuji Beach, both of which offer excellent conditions for swimming and snorkelling. These beaches are less crowded than Kabira Bay, giving you a more peaceful experience surrounded by nature. Snorkellers and divers will be thrilled by the vibrant coral reefs teeming with tropical fish, sea turtles and other marine life.

Another great way to explore Ishigaki Island is by visiting Ishigaki Yaima Village, a cultural attraction that offers visitors a chance to learn about the traditional Okinawan way of life. Yaima Village is a living museum where you can step back in time and see what life was like for the island’s residents in the past. The village is set in a lush tropical environment and features traditional Okinawan houses built in the architectural style of the region. You can wander through the village, exploring the thatched-roof homes, old sugar mills and gardens full of native plants. There are also hands-on experiences available, such as making traditional Okinawan crafts like pottery or weaving. If you’re interested in the local fauna, you can visit the Yaima Village’s Mini Zoo, which houses some of the native animals of Ishigaki Island, including the endangered Ishigaki wild cat, and a variety of tropical birds. The village offers a glimpse into the unique culture of Okinawa and its historical roots.

For those who enjoy nature and adventure, a visit to Mount Omoto is a must. Standing at 526 metres, Mount Omoto is the highest peak on Ishigaki Island and offers incredible hiking opportunities for those who want to explore the island’s lush tropical forests. The hike to the summit is a bit challenging, but the views from the top are well worth the effort. Once you reach the summit, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the island’s coastline, the surrounding smaller islands and the sparkling blue ocean. The hike takes you through thick forests filled with tropical plants and wildlife, providing a peaceful escape into nature. It’s also a great place for birdwatching, as many species of native birds can be spotted along the trail.
