What to see in Kanazawa

Kanzawa is a city that beautifully combines traditional Japanese culture with modern attractions. Known for its stunning gardens, historical sites and rich cultural heritage, Kanazawa offers plenty to explore.

One of the most iconic attractions in Kanazawa is Kenrokuen Garden, which is considered one of Japan’s “three great gardens.” This beautifully landscaped garden is a perfect example of traditional Japanese gardening, showcasing a combination of natural beauty and carefully crafted design. The garden is massive, offering peaceful paths through ponds, streams, bridges and seasonal flowers. Each season brings a unique experience - cherry blossoms in spring, vibrant greenery in summer, the golden hues of autumn leaves, and the serene beauty of winter, when the garden is often dusted with snow. As you stroll through Kenrokuen, you’ll pass by historic trees, stone lanterns and manicured shrubs, all set against the backdrop of the nearby mountains. A must-see feature of the garden is the Kotoji-toro Lantern, a famous stone lantern that sits beside a pond, making it a popular spot for photos.

Next, a visit to Kanazawa Castle is essential for anyone interested in Japanese history. The castle, once the home of the Maeda family who ruled over the Kaga domain, offers a glimpse into Japan’s feudal past. The current structure is a reconstruction, as the original castle was destroyed by fire, but it retains many historical elements. Visitors can explore the castle grounds and enjoy its beautiful stone walls, wide moats and traditional wooden buildings. The Hish Yagura (a corner turret) is particularly noteworthy, offering a look at the architectural style used during the Edo period. Inside the castle, you’ll find displays that explain the history of Kanazawa and the importance of the castle in the region. Kanazawa Castle Park, which surrounds the castle, is another great place to relax and take in the scenery. You can enjoy walking along the castle’s walls, observing the well-preserved landscape and learning more about the significance of the castle in Japan’s history.

For those who enjoy experiencing local culture and traditions, the Higashi Chaya District is a must-visit. This historical geisha district is one of the most well-preserved in Japan and offers visitors a chance to step back in time. Walking through the district’s narrow streets lined with traditional wooden houses, you’ll feel as though you’ve entered a different era. This district once thrived as a centre for geisha entertainment, and some of the original teahouses still operate today. At these teahouses, visitors can watch traditional performances, listen to shamisen music or even try on a kimono. The atmosphere of Higashi Chaya District is charming, with its antique architecture, small shops selling crafts and cosy cafés offering local sweets and tea. One of the highlights of the district is the Shima Tea House, which is now a museum and open to the public. The museum provides insight into the life of the geisha and offers exhibits about the district’s history.
