View Cruise DealNagoya, Japan’s fourth-largest city, is a dynamic blend of modern innovation and traditional charm. Located in Aichi Prefecture, Nagoya is known for its rich history, cutting-edge technology and vibrant culture. Whether you’re interested in exploring its historic landmarks, modern attractions or unique local cuisine, Nagoya offers a variety of activities that will delight visitors.
One of the most iconic attractions in Nagoya is Nagoya Castle, a historical landmark that beautifully blends traditional Japanese architecture with a rich history. Originally built in the early 1600s, Nagoya Castle served as the residence of the Owari branch of the Tokugawa family. The current structure, though reconstructed after being destroyed in World War II, maintains its historical charm. The castle is surrounded by impressive grounds, including gardens, moats and gates that evoke the grandeur of Japan’s feudal era. The main keep of the castle offers an excellent museum with exhibits on the history of the castle and the Tokugawa family, along with artefacts and samurai armour that give insight into the time period. Visitors can also explore the Honmaru Palace, a beautiful example of Edo-period architecture. One of the highlights of Nagoya Castle is the shachihoko, a mythical creature with the body of a carp and the head of a tiger, which sits atop the roof of the castle as a symbol of strength and protection. The surrounding castle park is also perfect for a stroll, especially during cherry blossom season, when the park is filled with vibrant colours.
Another must-visit in Nagoya is the Atsuta Shrine, one of the oldest and most important Shinto shrines in Japan. The shrine is said to house the sacred Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi, a legendary sword that is one of the Three Sacred Treasures of Japan. Atsuta Shrine is a peaceful place surrounded by beautiful trees, making it a perfect spot for reflection. The path leading to the shrine is lined with tall cedar trees, which creates a calming atmosphere as you approach the main hall. The shrine grounds feature several smaller shrines, ponds and walking paths, all adding to the serene environment. Atsuta Shrine is also a place of worship for many local people, so visitors can experience traditional Shinto practices. The shrine is especially popular during New Year celebrations when many people come to pray for good fortune in the year ahead. After exploring the shrine, don’t miss the nearby Atsuta Jingu Museum, where you can learn more about the shrine’s history and the cultural significance of the sacred sword.
Finally, Nagoya is a city famous for its food, and Nagoya Meshi (Nagoya cuisine) is an experience in itself. One of the most iconic dishes you must try is hitsumabushi, a grilled eel dish served over rice. Hitsumabushi can be enjoyed in several ways: you can eat it as is, with condiments or mix it with a flavourful broth. Another popular local dish is misokatsu, a twist on the classic tonkatsu (breaded and fried pork cutlet) with a rich, savoury miso-based sauce. For a truly unique experience, visit Osu Kannon, a lively shopping district filled with traditional and modern eateries. The district is home to many small, local restaurants serving up Nagoya’s famous dishes, including tebasaki (crispy chicken wings), tenmusu (shrimp tempura rice balls) and kishimen (flat udon noodles). After enjoying a delicious meal, you can browse through the many shops in the district selling everything from clothes to souvenirs.
