What to see in North Cape

While the North Cape itself is a natural spectacle, the region around the port has its own assortment of wonders awaiting visitors.

Depending on the season of your visit, the North Cape offers two distinct celestial phenomena. During the summer months, visitors can experience the enchanting Midnight Sun. The sun stays aloft for over two months, casting a golden-orange glow across the landscape even at night. A unique way to immerse yourself in this phenomenon is by participating in or watching the Midnight Sun Marathon. Held annually in the region, it's a surreal experience to see runners pacing under a sun that refuses to set. Conversely, winter months might offer you the ethereal beauty of the Northern Lights. Local operators organise chases, taking you to spots where the chances of witnessing this natural light display are highest. Watching the greens, purples and blues of the auroras dance across the polar night sky is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The indigenous Sami people have been the Arctic's custodians for thousands of years, herding reindeer and living in harmony with nature's extremes. Several Sami villages near the North Cape welcome visitors to experience their way of life. A typical visit might include entering a traditional 'lavvu' (Sami tent), listening to joik (Sami singing) and understanding the intricacies of reindeer herding. In winter, you can also embark on an exhilarating reindeer sledging adventure across the tundra. These experiences are not only fun but also provide insight into the rich cultural tapestry of Norway's far north.

History enthusiasts will find a wealth of information in the local museums. The North Cape Museum in nearby Honningsvåg offers a deep dive into the region's fishing history, Sami culture and the challenges of life in this northernmost outpost. However, the real gem is the Nordkapphallen, situated right at the plateau. This visitor centre, built for those coming to witness the Midnight Sun or the Northern Lights, offers much more than just viewpoints. Inside, you'll find a chapel, historical exhibits, a cinema screening a film about the North Cape's four seasons and even a Thai museum, commemorating the visit of a Siamese king in 1907.
