What to see in Ponta Delgada

Ponta Delgada, the capital of São Miguel Island in Portugal's Azores, blends natural beauty with rich culture. Known for its stunning landscapes, historic architecture and vibrant markets, the city offers unique experiences like whale watching, hiking and savouring Azorean cuisine, making it a must-visit destination.

Exploring the historic centre of Ponta Delgada provides a deep dive into the city's rich past and cultural heritage. The city centre is a delightful blend of old-world charm and modern vibrancy, characterised by its narrow cobblestone streets, whitewashed buildings with black volcanic stone accents and beautiful squares. One of the most iconic landmarks is the Portas da Cidade, or the City Gates, which date back to the 18th century and serve as a symbolic entrance to the historic area. Nearby, the Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião, a magnificent 16th-century church, showcases impressive baroque architecture and intricate woodwork.

Visiting the Sete Cidades, a stunning natural wonder located just a short drive from Ponta Delgada, is an unforgettable experience. This massive volcanic crater, now home to two picturesque lakes, is one of the most iconic landscapes in the Azores. The twin lakes, Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde, are named for their distinct blue and green hues, which are especially striking when viewed from the Vista do Rei viewpoint. The contrasting colours of the lakes are the result of different types of algae and the way the sunlight reflects off their surfaces. Hiking trails around the crater offer spectacular views and opportunities to explore the lush surroundings. One popular trail is the Vista do Rei to Sete Cidades route, which provides panoramic vistas of the lakes and the surrounding landscape. For those who prefer a more leisurely experience, renting a kayak or paddleboard on Lagoa Azul allows for a peaceful exploration of the waters. The small village of Sete Cidades, located within the crater, offers charming streets and local cafes where visitors can relax and soak in the serene environment.

Indulging in the local cuisine of Ponta Delgada is another essential experience that provides a taste of the island’s rich culinary traditions. The Azorean cuisine is characterised by its use of fresh, locally sourced ingredients, including seafood, meats and dairy products. One of the most famous dishes is Cozido das Furnas, a traditional stew that is cooked underground using the natural geothermal heat found in the Furnas Valley. This hearty dish typically includes a variety of meats, vegetables and spices, and has a unique, rich flavour imparted by the volcanic steam. Seafood lovers will enjoy dishes like polvo à lagareiro, octopus baked with olive oil and garlic and various fish stews made with the catch of the day. Local cheeses, such as Queijo São Jorge, are renowned for their distinctive flavours and are often enjoyed with freshly baked bread and Azorean wines. Desserts in Ponta Delgada often feature local fruits, such as pineapples and passion fruit, as well as traditional pastries like queijadas (sweet cheese tarts) and malasadas (fried doughnuts).
