What to see in Reykjavík

Reykjavík, a city where the stark beauty of its volcanic surroundings is matched only by the warmth of its inhabitants and the vibrant cultural tapestry woven into its urban fabric.

Depending on the time of year that you cruise to Reykjavík, a visit to Iceland’s capital simply wouldn’t be complete without a tour to see the spectacular Northern Lights. Visible for approximately eight months of the year, from around August to April, the Aurora Borealis are quite simply one of the natural wonders of the world and an attraction on the bucket list of many people. Of course, there are no guarantees that you will experience the lights, but they will certainly be worth the trip if you are lucky enough to do so.

Not only is Reykjavík's Hallgrímskirkja Church a must-see landmark, it’s unlikely that you’d be able to miss it, as its tower can be seen from almost everywhere in the city. This impressive edifice was inspired by the shapes and forms created when lava cools into basalt rock and is certainly a sight to behold. The church, whose construction took just over 40 years, features a colossus of a pipe organ which stands at 15 metres tall and weighs 25 tons. You can take an elevator trip up to the top of the tower to enjoy breathtaking views across the city.

Amongst Iceland’s most enduring attractions are its thermal pools, where you can bathe away any stresses and strains in their natural goodness. Around 40 minutes outside Reykjavík is the Blue Lagoon; a pool of water situated in a rugged lava landscape, heated from far beneath the surface of the earth. The lagoon forms the centrepiece of a luxurious health spa, where you can revel in the mineral-rich geothermal seawater. Along with the pure Icelandic air, this natural spa treatment will leave you feeling aglow long after you leave.
