What to see in Shimizu

Shimizu offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural attractions and scenic views, making it an excellent destination for travellers. Located near Mount Fuji, Shimizu has a picturesque harbour, rich history and plenty of activities that highlight its stunning coastal location.

One of the most iconic attractions in Shimizu is the Miho no Matsubara, a beautiful pine tree forest that stretches along the coastline. This area is famous for its historical and cultural significance, as it has been celebrated in Japanese literature and art for centuries. Miho no Matsubara offers an incredible view of Mount Fuji across the bay, with the striking combination of the mountain’s snow-capped peak and the lush pine trees creating a scenic masterpiece. The beach is a peaceful place to relax, and the coastline is lined with thousands of pine trees that create a tranquil, almost magical atmosphere. Visitors can walk along the sandy shores and enjoy the serene environment, perfect for a leisurely stroll or a picnic. The area is also home to Miho Shrine, a small but beautiful Shinto shrine that sits near the beach. The shrine is dedicated to the goddess of the sea, and its location provides visitors with a peaceful and spiritual experience as they admire the view of Mount Fuji in the background.

Another must-visit location in Shimizu is the Shimizu S-Pulse Dream Plaza, a large shopping and entertainment complex that offers both fun and relaxation for all ages. Located right by the Shimizu Port, the plaza features a variety of shops, restaurants and cafés, many with beautiful views of the harbour and the Pacific Ocean. Visitors can shop for unique Japanese goods, souvenirs and local products while enjoying the lively atmosphere. If you’re looking for a place to enjoy local food, Shimizu S-Pulse Dream Plaza has several restaurants offering delicious fresh seafood, including local specialities like shirasu (baby sardines) and sushi.

Lastly, a cruise to Shimizu wouldn’t be complete without exploring Satta Pass, one of the most scenic spots in the area, offering an incredible view of Shimizu Harbour and Mount Fuji. Satta Pass is located on a hilltop along the old Tōkaidō road, which was once a major highway connecting Edo (modern-day Tokyo) and Kyoto during the Edo period. The pass has been a famous viewpoint for centuries, and it’s said to have been admired by travellers passing through the area in the past. Today, visitors can enjoy a scenic hike or drive up to the viewpoint, where they’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the city, the harbour and the iconic Mount Fuji. The area is especially beautiful during the early morning or evening when the light reflects off the ocean and creates a peaceful atmosphere. Satta Pass is also a popular spot for photographers, as the view is perfect for capturing the natural beauty of the region. Along the way, you’ll find several historical markers that tell the story of the pass and its importance in Japan’s past, making it a great stop for those interested in history and culture.
