What to see in Trondheim

Trondheim, with its cobbled streets and medieval cathedral, whispers tales of Viking history while embracing a lively, modern Nordic spirit.

Trondheim is rightly recognised as a city for cyclists, and there's a lot to be said for riding out to the city's four corners to get a true taste of what's on offer. Bakklandet, the old part of the town, is the perfect spot to enjoy a taste of Norway as it used to be; its narrow streets and small houses are a picturesque introduction to the city. On your way there from the city centre, take a moment to enjoy the Old Town Bridge, Gamle Bybro, built in 1681 and now one of the most iconic spots in the city.

Architecture buffs will appreciate the religious monument of Nidaros Cathedral, famed as the world's northernmost cathedral built in a Gothic style. The impressive building lays claim to a unique history; built over the burial site of St Olav, the Nordic king who introduced Christianity to Norway. Work began in 1070 and was completed in 1300, and the builders' efforts weren't wasted – its spellbinding architecture will impress even the toughest of critics.

Bymarka is perfect for active visitors looking for a spot of fresh air. If you've got a few hours to spare, head there for an hour or two of hiking (in summer) or skiing (in winter) and relish its impressive views and bustling wildlife. The nature reserve is one of the most popular spots in the region - and no wonder, it is home to ten lakes and over 200km of marked hiking trails – making it a great spot for adventure.

If you're musically minded, you'll love Norway's National Music Museum. Positioned within stunning gardens and housed in a manor house which dates back to the late nineteenth century, this museum is a collection of over 2,000 musical instruments of all ages sourced from around the world. Come face to face with a house organ made in the 1700s, a pocket-sized Italian violin and a self-playing piano from 1918.

While we're on the subject of music, fans can't leave Trondheim without heading to Rockheim, the country's national museum of rock and pop music. This six-storey ode to popular music has had visitors singing its praises since it first opened in 2010. A must-visit for lovers of music of all ages.
