A snowy road into Alta at sundown

Alta, Finnmark, Norway Sat 14 Dec 2024

A snowy road into Alta at sundown

As one of the best places on earth to witness the Northern Lights in winter, and experience the sensation of the Midnight Sun in summer, Alta is a truly magical destination. Originally inhabited by the indigenous Sami people, the area has a fascinating cultural history. Rock carvings in nearby Hjemmeluft are believed to date from around 4,200 to 500 BC. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, the carvings on display in the Alta Museum are evidence of the existence of human activity in the far north during prehistoric times. Alta needed rebuilding after World War II, so the buildings of this northern Norwegian port are relatively new; notable architecture includes the Northern Lights Cathedral. A particular highlight in the winter months is the Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel. Everything inside and outside the hotel is made of ice, and is open to visitors from January until it melts away in spring. The head of the Altafjord, where the Altaelva runs through the town, is said to have the best salmon fishing in the world. It’s still possible to see the fish leaping up the river, despite the construction of the 100m Altadammen in the 1970s.

Sortland, Vesterålen, Norway

Sortland, Vesterålen, Norway Mon 16 Dec 2024

Sortland, Vesterålen, Norway

Sortland, the largest town of the beautiful Vesterålen archipelago, is one of Northern Norway’s most unique destinations. Nicknamed ‘Blue Town’, Sortland is almost entirely painted in various shades of blue, thanks to any idea put forward by artist Bjorn Elvenes at the start of the new millennium. Elvenes proposed that – with the help of other local artists and residents – Sortland should become a living 3D painting, and today the town’s mix of architecture, comprising Swiss style wood, concrete and glass structures, is an exhibit of his vision. It’s worth exploring the town to see how the blue colour scheme is developing alone, though there are plenty of attractions such as interesting art exhibitions, a beautiful early 20th century church and the pretty downtown, where you can enjoy ‘Writings on a Field of Blue’. Visiting Sortland offers chances to seek-out Vesterålen's natural treasures, too. Rugged, unspoilt countryside landscapes and miles of gorgeous island coastline are within reach, while the archipelago and its surrounding waters are also home to diverse wildlife, from seals and seabirds to whales. In the summer months it is possible to experience the magical midnight sun here; and in the winter, visitors might be lucky enough to witness the awe-inspiring Northern Lights.

Delight in the Joy of the Journey

With Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, the journey is every bit as important as the destination. Which is why they’ve created five unique on board Signature Experiences. Each one encapsulates what is special about a Fred. Olsen cruise and ensures that those who love to travel get the most out of their journey and the destinations they visit.

Joy of the Journey Guides

The Journey Guides will host talks, presentations and private lunches, and are available to anyone who wishes to find out more about their journey. And please don’t worry, if sitting and relaxing is what you are on the cruise to do, that’s fine too. You will find our Journey Guide – including a Nature Guide, Culture Guide, Entertainment Host and Maritime Guide – on board every Fred. Olsen ship to entertain and inspire, with their insights and stories.

The Sky at Sea

The Sky at Sea

There is nothing quite like a sunrise at sea or looking up at the beauty of the night sky from the deck of a ship. On clear nights we host stargazing experiences where you can sit back on the open deck, snuggled in a blanket with a hot chocolate or a toddy, and listen to our experts, as we bring the night sky to life.

The Ship and the Sea

Fred. Olsen’s behind-the scenes The Ship and the Sea experiences reflect that maritime is in their DNA. Join insightful ‘Audience with…’ interviews with key members of the crew and find out what it takes to sail a cruise ship

Fred Olsen Crew Member

Treats of the Region

Come and enjoy the Treats of the Region sessions where you can meet chefs who will show you how to prepare local dishes from the destinations you are visiting. And the best part? Each one ends with a chance to sample the creation!

Scenic Discoveries

Rather than sailing the fastest and most direct routes, Fred. Olsen prefer to sail the most fascinating way. Their Scenic Discoveries are designed to take in all the islands, ports, waterways, lochs and lakes, fjords and interesting seascapes that are out there.

Itinerary Insights

On the Itinerary Insights programme, friendly guest speakers will provide a deeper understanding of the history and culture of your destinations before you arrive.
