Puntarenas, which means "Sandy Point" in Spanish, is the capital and main city in the province Puntarenas, Costa Rica, at the Pacific Coast. The oddly-shaped province has its largest section in the South, far from the capital. A mountainous country, Costa Rica ranges from sea level to peaks as high as 13,000 feet and a succession of white, sandy beaches follow one another along the Pacific Coast before reaching the rich blue waters. The country was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1502 and still offers outstanding beauty and intriguing cultures to this day.

Puntarenas isn’t called the rich coast for no reason, its opulent, large green spaces and unspoilt scenery makes it one of the prettiest locations in South America. Grand views are often what draw people to the coastal town as well as inexpensive eateries and busy market places. Surfing also plays a huge part in the popularity of the town and crystal clear waves are often spotted off the shore with brave riders soaring on their peaks onto the shores of the beaches.
A wander around Puntarenas will open your eyes to the rich coffee-making history the location has. Taste nature’s gold as you explore one of the coffee plantations and see the production of some of the world’s best beans. Head to a nearby coffee shop and taste the wonders of the local work for a real experience of Costa Rica and it’s rich coffee making royalties.
There is no better way to see the rainforests of Puntarenas than from up in the air above the trees. Take a canopy tour through the dense, green ferns, trees and lianas before exploring some of the local wildlife that calls the magical location their home. Tours can be arranged from the town and offer a once in a lifetime opportunity to see some of the worlds endangered animals in their own habitats.
Puntarenas is famous for its deep orange and pink sunsets as they glow on the gentle currents of the warm sea. Sit on the beach or head onto the hills to experience the true beauty of these South American sights and watch as the sun dips behind the glowing, calm sea.
