What to see in Argostoli

Argostoli, the vibrant capital of Kefalonia, Greece's largest Ionian island, offers a charming mix of coastal beauty and Mediterranean culture. With its picturesque harbour, bustling streets and cultural attractions, it's a gateway to Kefalonia's natural wonders, including the Melissani Cave and Myrtos Beach, all bathed in warm Greek hospitality.

Start your exploration of Argostoli at its vibrant waterfront, where you can immerse yourself in the town's relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere. The palm-lined promenade along the coastline is a delightful place for a leisurely stroll, offering beautiful views of the sea and the surrounding hills. As you walk along the waterfront, you'll encounter numerous cafes, restaurants and shops, where you can enjoy a coffee or a meal while watching the boats and yachts bobbing in the harbour. Try some of the fresh seafood for which the island is famous, including dishes like grilled octopus and local fish specialities.

To delve into the cultural heritage of Kefalonia and Argostoli, pay a visit to the Korgialenio Historic and Folklore Museum. Located in a beautiful neoclassical building in the town centre, this museum showcases a rich collection of artefacts and exhibits that offer insights into the island's history and traditions. The museum's exhibits include archaeological finds, historical documents, traditional costumes and folk art. You can explore the rooms dedicated to various aspects of Kefalonian life, from agriculture and fishing to religious customs and daily life in the past.

A short drive or hike from Argostoli will take you to St. George's Castle (Kastro ton Agion), a historic site perched on a hilltop overlooking the town. The castle dates back to the Byzantine era and offers panoramic views of Argostoli, the bay and the surrounding landscape. The hike to the castle is relatively easy and takes you through scenic olive groves and countryside. Once you reach the castle, you can explore its ruins, including sections of the walls and towers. The views from the castle are particularly stunning during sunset, providing an ideal backdrop for memorable photos.
