What to see in Mossel Bay

Whether you’re a history buff, nature enthusiast or thrill-seeker, there’s something in or around Mossel Bay’s port area to ignite your interest.

Just a short walk from the port, the Bartolomau Dias Museum Complex is a cultural gem that no visitor should miss. The museum is named after the Portuguese explorer who first set foot here in 1488 and is home to several intriguing exhibits. The Maritime Museum, part of the complex, is a highlight, featuring a full-scale replica of Dias’ caravel, the type of ship he would have sailed during his voyage around the Cape of Good Hope. There’s also the famous Post Office Tree, a large milkwood tree under which sailors centuries ago would leave messages for one another in a shoe or iron pot. This ancient natural postbox still receives mail and visitors can send postcards from here bearing a special frank.

For those who prefer a bit more adrenaline, the area known as the Point, a leisurely stroll or short ride from the port, is the place to be. This area is not only famous for its stunning views from the Cape St. Blaize Lighthouse but also for the plethora of outdoor activities it offers. Surfing is huge in Mossel Bay, and the Point is the epicentre, with waves suitable for beginners and seasoned surfers alike. Numerous surf schools and shops along the beachfront offer lessons and equipment rental. If you’re visiting between May and November, keep an eye out for the majestic whales that frequent these waters during this time.

For nature lovers, the St. Blaize Trail is a must-do. The trailhead starts at the old Cape St. Blaize Lighthouse, an iconic 1864 structure still operational and open for tours. The lighthouse offers panoramic views of the town and coastline, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot dolphins or whales frolicking in the bay. The trail itself is a 13.5-kilometre route along the cliffs, boasting breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean, with rich fynbos and birdlife to admire. The pathway takes you along the rugged coastline, through caves and past ancient Khoi San middens, providing a sense of the area’s long history. It’s a fairly easy walk, but it’s best to come prepared with comfortable shoes, sun protection and plenty of water.
