What to see in Souda Bay

Souda Bay, on Crete's northern coast, is a natural harbour renowned for its historical significance and scenic beauty. A vital naval base and transport hub, it combines strategic importance with the charm of its surrounding landscapes. The bay's rich history and picturesque setting make it an intriguing destination.

Just a short drive from Souda Bay lies the enchanting town of Chania, a destination brimming with history and charm. Chania's Old Town is a captivating maze of narrow alleys, historic buildings and Venetian architecture that reflects the island's rich past. Start your exploration at the bustling Venetian Harbor, a picturesque waterfront area lined with colourful buildings, cafes and restaurants. The iconic Venetian Lighthouse, built in the 16th century, stands as a sentinel at the entrance to the harbour and provides a stunning backdrop for photos.

Nature enthusiasts and hikers will find a captivating adventure awaiting them in the nearby Samaria Gorge, one of Europe's longest and most impressive canyons. Located in the Samaria National Park, this natural wonder offers an opportunity to explore Crete's rugged and pristine landscapes. The Samaria Gorge begins at the plateau of Omalos and stretches for approximately 10 miles before reaching the coastal village of Agia Roumeli, where the Libyan Sea awaits. The gorge is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, with towering cliffs, lush vegetation and crystal-clear streams.

For a journey into Crete's ancient past, venture to the ruins of Aptera, an ancient city located just a short drive from Souda Bay. Aptera, which dates back to the Minoan period, offers a glimpse into the island's rich history and archaeological heritage. The site is known for its well-preserved Roman cisterns, Hellenistic walls and ancient theatre, which once hosted performances for the city's inhabitants. Aptera also features a series of intriguing tombs, including the Aptera Necropolis, where you can explore rock-cut chamber tombs and burial mounds.
