Got a head for heights?

One of Tianjin’s most recognisable landmarks is its eponymous TV and Radio Tower, known locally as Tian Ta. Standing at 415 metres tall, this is the fourth highest tower of its kind in the world and is a popular draw for tourists and locals alike. Make your way to the 248m-high first floor for mouth-watering Chinese delicacies and karaoke at Xiankelai, or enjoy incredible views across the city at the second storey Observatory and the revolving restaurant on the floor above. Afterwards, take a leisurely walk around the lake which surrounds this much-loved Tianjin attraction.

A whirlwind of activity

All facets of Chinese life can be found along ‘Guwenhua Jie’, or Ancient Cultural Street. On the banks of the Haihe River, it is home to some gorgeous replica architecture in the style of the Qing Dynasty, while it hosts a superb range of traditional crafts. The street is also the site of the fourteenth century Temple of the Queen of Heaven, which is one of only three Mazu temples in the world. Look out for the intricate paintings etched onto the doors and windows of the area’s other buildings – they colourfully illustrate legendary tales and other enthralling subjects.

A taste of Tianjin past

Around 200,000 exhibits can be found at the Tianjin Museum – a bargain at free entry! Thought to be China’s second largest building, the relics in this vast and distinctive space include ancient ceramics, calligraphies, jades, paintings and coins. You’ll be led on a journey of more than 10,000 years of Tianjin’s rich history, from the Old Stone Age right through to the Opium Wars and the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Make sure you pay a visit at night-time too, when this impressive building is illuminated to fantastic effect.
