The 530-passenger MS Roald Amundsen joined the Hurtigruten Expeditions fleet in 2019. She is most loved for her environmentally-friendly aspects.
Aboard MS Roald Amundsen, there are two standard categories of cabins and six categories of suites. Choose from Polar Outside, Arctic Superior and Expedition Suites. Though every stateroom features a comfortable seating area, television, safe, hair dryer, mini-fridge and writing desk, there are a number of differences.
Polar Outside cabins are the most basic offering available. Great for those who wish to spend the majority of their time exploring the ship and the shore, Polar Outside’s feature a comfortable queen-size bed. Arctic Superiors accommodate two to four passengers and are perfect for groups travelling together. Half of the Arctic Superior cabins on MS Roald Amundsen have a balcony. Expedition Suites come in six categories, options include a corner suite without a balcony, large suites with balconies and extra large suites with or without balconies. Deck 9 is entirely dedicated to suites, each with a unique name.
Nordic and Norwegian heritage inspire all three restaurants on MS Roald Amundsen. Named after the Norwegian ship chandler and polar expedition supplier, Tinus Aune, Restaurant Aune, which is located on Deck 6, is the place to be for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For dinner, you can choose from a buffet or a set menu for both American and Scandinavian tastes.
Restaurant Fredheim, also on Deck 6, is MS Roald Amundsen’s informal and social meeting place, named after a 1900s hunting station on Svalbard. The menu in Restaurant Fredheim has been inspired by street food, so you’ll find everything from Mexican to American cuisine. There’s also a great plant-based offering. Restaurant Lindstrøm, a speciality restaurant named after Adolf Lindstrøm, is where you’ll find Hurtigruten’s famous king crab. Though included for suite passengers, Restaurant Lindstrøm has a small cover charge.
One of the most eye-catching design features on MS Roald Amundsen is her two-level indoor and outdoor Observation Deck which wraps around the top of her bow. Hidden behind it, you’ll find the core of the onboard experience; the Amundsen Science Center. Packed with state-of-the-art technology, the immersive ‘edutainment’ area allows you to mingle with the crew and gain a better understanding of the destinations you’re exploring.
The flexible venue features lecture spaces, a small library and speciality areas for workshops in photography, biology and much more. It is also the onboard headquarters for Hurtigruten Expeditions’ handpicked expedition team. The expedition team lead a range of exciting shore excursions from shore landings to explore historic expedition camps to ice cruising and kayaking trips.
After a full day of adventure, The Explorer Lounge on Deck 10 is the perfect spot to relax and reminisce alongside a cocktail. The faux fireplace (complete with a crackling sound to add to the atmosphere) will be ready and waiting to warm you up.
MS Roald Amundsen sails her guests to the USA, Alaska, South America, Antarctica and Canada.
